Early SE5a

Post by IanC » Thu Feb 25, 2016 12:20 pm

Hi,
I 've just bought a SE5a, SEN 41K. It's in very good cosmetic condition, with enough quirks to keep me entertained for some time to come I suspect.

It's got a 4 speed box (reverse on the right) and no overdrive, but unlike the 4spd I had years ago, it's got a hydraulic clutch. The axle appears to be 3.31/1 (i.e. two turns of a rear wheel give 3 and a third turns of the propshaft. So, I'm not sure if this is a conversion of an overdrive model. One clue might be in the speedo, which under-reads by a long way . I've attached a photo below, the code reads SNT-6141/06 1000.

Does this code correspond with anyone's speedo as fitted on a SE5a?

I'll post some photos of the car later.

Regards,
Ian

Sounds like an overdrive car that's had its box replaced with the non-overdrive version of the 2 rod box. Funnily enough, that's exactly how my first 5a was..

It could explain why your speedo is out - all
GTE speedos are 1000 turns per mile but the speedo gear in the box probably suits the Zodiac donor instead.

Hi Phil,

That's sort of my line of thinking too. I would have retained the 4 speed box but it's noisy (and recalcitrant) so will need replacing at some stage. I'm currently thinking of sourcing an o/d box and fitting that and keeping the low ratio axle. There's bad 'clonk' on the back axle, but I may have a go at fixing it - I know the theory, but never had the practice!

That's probably the best option - 2 rod overdrive boxes crop up from time to time.

Photo of new arrival as promised. Cosmetics great, mechanicals, well, plenty to keep me on my toes!

Thanks for the kind comments guys, here's some more photos. It's off the road currently (shock absorbers, upholstery repairs, fuel gauge) but I hope to be back on the road soon.

Cheers,
Ian

That's a really gorgeous example! Love the colour coordinated webasto, and the paint looks amazing. At least the mechanical side is a lot more fun to deal with than anything cosmetic, so I'm sure you'll have a lot of enjoyment from it.

Thanks,
The webasto is a nice touch, and the headlining is just excellent. The car has done practically no miles for about seven years (sometimes only a trip to the MoT station by the looks of things). And its first decent run in years to my place certainly shook things up like brakes and shockers so there's more to do than I had anticpated. But as you say the mechanical side is more fun, so I expect it''ll keep me happy on that front for a while to come. And it goes great!
Cheers,
Ian

Very nice!

This reads like a good introduction to a project thread, if you like I could move it for you? (you can change the title at any time by editing the first post) :)
