551 A race oddity

Post by BigBobPilot » Tue Aug 15, 2017 10:11 pm

I thought this evening I'd weld up the exhaust mounts I'd previously cut, drilled etc. Then weld them on to the exhaust:

I still need to attach the exhaust isolators to the chassis. Oh and drill a hole and weld a lambda sensor boss in the down pipe.

551 A race oddity

Post by BigBobPilot » Sat Aug 19, 2017 8:59 pm

I decided I was going to have a go at vinyl wrapping on this car. I've read lots of opinions & cons. However, I decided to go ahead anyway. My reasoning is: I'm terrible at getting a decent paint finish; I'd seen a matt metallic car that I liked the look of; I thought colour matching when repairing / replacing panels for accident damage might be better than paint.

My first attempt on the boot lid wasn't exactly plain sailing. I'd chosen it as I thought it was the easiest, flatest panel, but I screwed it up a bit. I've made the best of it for now, but I may need to do it again.

Next up I tried the rear deck panel. This was an awkward shape, but with my learning from the boot lid I was happier with it.

I was then confident to have a go at the hard top, but that started to go wrong. After stopping and watching a load of YouTube videos, I carried on and managed to just about rescue it, although I burned a small patch with the heat gun.

I'm pleased with the overall affect, but I won't be troubling any pros! It will definitely look better watching it drive past at 100mph, rather than looking at it up close.

Off to Curborough tomorrow to see what completed cars look like!

551 A race oddity

Post by BigBobPilot » Sun Aug 20, 2017 9:07 pm

Well, I went to Curborough today. Watched a few cars on track, had an ice cream, looked at a few cars, had some chips, chatted to some folks. It was good to catch up with Pete Brown, who was one of the men to beat when I started hill climbing it must have been 10 or so years since I'd seen him.

Then I came home and went out into the garage, looked at where the steering column switches fit against my roll cage dash bar & decided on a simple mod to make them fit again, as they usually fit to the ignition barrel, which is long gone on mine. Fitted a couple of bolts in the steering column UJs, fitted the fuel filler cap in my finished rear deck panel, which has the honour of the obligatory photo.

Then I decided on some bits that need to be ordered to arrive before the bank hol weekend and hatched a rough plan of action for the same bank hol weekend. Although I've as good as missed this race season with the car, I still want to keep on with it so I don't miss next year's race season too. Now to order those bits...

It is seriously beginning to look like it means business.

Can't you be tempted out onto the hills with it to knock a few of CNH's records down?

He still has a few in Big Bob that I need to remove RR, would be great to see the new build make a guest appearance now and again Ben?

Had the car been finished, I would have entered Curborough. Earlier in the year, I was expecting it to be ready by now.

However, it is being built as a race car, to the regs of the series I want to race, and hopefully be competitive in too.

Yep, very important to build/spec something to what you actually intend doing. Otherwise you end up with "a master of nothing" car.

As such at the very least I imagine it will be abit too stiff for hills and tyres too hard?

Loving the progress Ben!!

Yep, harder tyres that can last at least 20 minutes (but should do more than that, I hope!). The car is possibly heavier where I need it to be more robust & with a bigger fuel tank. I'm not sure about suspension stiffness, I think it might be ok there, but it's certainly debatable. The biggest contributor has got to be the tyres though, I won't be going out and spanking £1500 for a new set of hill climb slicks for 1 event, that's for sure.

If you can't see any dangers in the track head, will you drive quicker?
