Manny's SS1 1800 Ti

Post by manny » Thu Feb 18, 2016 10:22 pm

Good day all,

i have now purchased a SS1 from a forum member, unseen but have read the progress he made since he purchased it.

It should be with me tomorrow night- as i know nothing about this gem\model - i am currently reading up on various projects on the forum...

pics for now

SS1 1800Ti

i am sure as with the GTE purchase - it will be steep learning curve! but enjoyable - it's not quite in running order yet- but almost there from what i have gathered.

Ta

Manny

PS..just got to break the news to the boss....

good day all,

I hope you are all well..

the PO had removed the turbo - there is clearly play in the impeller shaft to the point were the blades are able to skim the housing...i have emailed a couple of companies to recondition the turbo - but no positive replies so far...any one able to offer companies that my be able to help.
I have seen Ebay rebuild kit- but very last resort- as balancing , wear and tear etc wont be compensated for..

Or any alternatives...

Steve "Corky" Cork and Kev "MrGoldtop1960" Osborne have both had turbos reconditioned in the last few years?

Turbo Technics in northampton or Turbo Dyanamics in Poole would be my suggestion but wont be cheapest but given that its a job that costs 50 quids worth of gaskets and lots of time, skinned knuckles and swearing you want the job done right :-)

I used these people http://www.turboforce.co.uk/contact.html .

When the turbo first came back to me there was an oil leak, which was annoying to say the least. However they took it back and re-fitted all the seals. Since refurb the turbo has done three or four seasons of sprinting and hill climbing without any issues. It's still in the car and is working fine.

I went to them as they were recommended by a Club member (Alan Wells IIRC), and they were close enough for me to drop it off and suss them out. From memory they were a little bit cheaper that Turbotechnics.

Turbotechnics have a very good reputation, and I would have no worries about sending it to them either.

Expect to pay IRO of £300-£400 for the job. Not cheap, but when you consider the cost of the genuine gaskets, time and effort to fit it, you'll only want to do it once. I think the home rebuild kits are a false economy, as too are the Chinese replica turbos to that sell for around £150.

thanks all, I have emailed TT for now,

Do the recommended traders have gaskets?- i know i need an orange one - as it is split - the others i can get via Ebay as recommended in the sticky.

i'll get some pics of the turbo exhaust manifold - there appears to be a slight split\twist near its exit where the two air passages converge

The orange one as you call it pretty rare when I last looked a few years ago and very expensive (£40-£50 from memory  ).

They are also pretty fragile and do tend to split easily. Personally I would look at using some silicone pipe as I did when I installed my Intercooler. You should be able to get a graduated one that fits over the turbo and the overpipe.

Anything other than genuine Nissan gaskets tend to be a waste of money. I learnt the hard way :(
