Rollbar, hardtop, diamond alloys - could be a bargain?

I wonder what the spoiler's off?

All questions will be answered in a couple of weeks or so, once I have collected it. There are one or two faults which can be seen in the photographs, once they have been downloaded and enlarged. There's a 2 - 3 inch crack on the outer edge of the O/S front spoiler, and the switchgear above the radio seems to have come adrift. The hood also seems to be a poor fit, but at least it has a hard-top for the coming winter. Even so, it does seem to have been a bargain for a tad under four figures.

All I have to do now is work-out how I can get from the Isle of Wight to Peterborough and back in a day. I have been to Stafford and back in a day but that was driving both ways.

By the way Phil, what's a "Womble" one, or have I missed something over the years?

Sent the cheque off today and spoke to the seller. He bought it as a non-runner and seems to have done a fair amount of work, overhauled the ignition system, new cam belt and water pump, full service and MOT in June. Things that will need attention in future. Source another wheel, there are only four of the replacements although it comes with the original wheels fitted with very old tyres, also both driving lights need replacing. The suspension bushes will need doing for next MOT as will a track-rod end. I also understand that, while it doesn't look too bad, it would probably benefit from a re-paint. So perhaps the price paid may have been about right.

Womble - there are a few "WMB" plated E reg SS1s; bit of a batch job of registrations.

And in Eastleigh too, just across the water from me, rather than a trip to Peterborough. Would be interesting to compare the two.

No wonder I'm hopeless at cryptic crosswords!

Thanks Phil.

I knew I had this photograph somewhere in my files. A couple of the 'Wombles' in the club.

Looks quite an honest unmolested car and with 40,000 only on the clock should be a really good buy; once the fuel filter is fitted and the tank drained.

A New Project. The Pale Green 'Womble' SS1

Post by Barrie James » Sat Oct 17, 2015 11:35 pm

I managed to get up to Peterborough today to collect the SS1. While it's a bit rough around the edges, it has the basis of a very sound car. It ran very well all the way home and even manages to cope with our dreadful Island roads.

The owner had kindly fitted the Hardtop, had taken the original wheels to his local tyre company who chose the best tyre for the spare. There are only four of the new wheels, and had the tyres taken off the other wheels, so I came home with three in the boot and one in the front footwell. A real bonus was being given, just as I was about to leave, copies of the club's two manuals and a copy of Alterpart. I must have made a good impression, as he had to fish them out of a cupboard.

In deference to the fact the car hadn't been used regularly for some time I started quite gently and slowly built-up the speed until I was doing a steady 60, which I held for 20 miles of so, I then ran it up to 70 until I had done about 100 miles. Every thing seemed to be alright, no untoward squeaks or rattles, just the hood frame gently knocking the anti-roll bar. I didn't manage to cure that at all. So I risked putting my foot down a bit, the car seemed very willing and I'm sure would have gone higher than the mid 80s I achieved, briefly, while overtaking.

It was like going back in time, I felt the same as I did when driving my Frogeye Sprite in the '60s. Yes, an SS1 can make you feel younger! I haven't enjoyed driving so much for a long time.

The paint is quite poor in places, especially the headlamp panel and the o/s rear quarter. The dashboard and centre panel are all awry and not properly fixed as the owner had to take the dash apart to remove the '80s alarm system which was faulty and draining the battery. Both the bonnet and boot are difficult to raise as they catch, they'll have to wait a while, but I suspect the hinges may need adjusting and lubricating. I had to use WD40 on the boot lock before I was able to lock it. The headlamps are unusual in the fact that you switch them on, then press a button on the dashboard to raise them, and only then do they come on. You switch them off, they go out and then you press the same button to lower them.

More later as I investigate. In the meantime, I attach some pictures, taken just as I was about to leave.

If it got you all the way home then it sounds like a good base for a rolling project, enjoy!

One day I will get a drive in a SS1 to see what all the fuss is about! :D

Re headlamp pods raising/lowering:

If you mean the little red button on the right of the steering wheel, that is the thermal cut-out. This is an overload protect if the pods get stuck and is designed to protect the lift motors. In the event of overload, the red button pops and has to be pressed in to reset and should stay in until there is another overload. As your pods seem to be functioning correctly when this button is pressed (do you have to hold it in?), then I would suspect this switch itself needs looking at. It is a similar device to one like you'd find in a kettle.

The lamps themselves, by design, don't come on until the pods are fully raised and go out immediately before lowering. It's to safeguard against the Mothership mistaking an SS1 for one of its exploration pods. :)

If you managed to get the speedo north of 80mph, the engine sounds like it's in good order.

Now you know the secret Barrie; they are a true British Sportscar. Will - it's your turn next. You just have to make that leap of faith and get behind the wheel of one.
