Does Run Fast 351 Eventually!

Post by b.c.flat hat » Fri Jun 05, 2015 10:48 am

I've had my GTE since 1991 but always liked the Coupes shape especially after losing so many times at sprints/hill climbs to Trevors Red Rocket. I finally bought this one at a local auction and set about repairing and improving it.

The electrics, brakes, suspension, springs and dampers, heater, exhausts and some body cosmetics have been done so far but it's on the road and I'm lovin' it! The thread title refers to its registration!

Electrics first as the alternator was reported as "over charging". The whole car was protected by only two fuses from new, both 50amp! I've welded with less than that so I designed a new system with everything either using fused relays or blade fuses, even the clock! The ammeter was discarded and replaced with a voltmeter to remove a lot of the heavy current flow from within the cabin.

I've thrown 4 fuse boxes, 4 bus bars, 9 fused relays and new cable at everything except the rear loom. It gets cold oop 'ere int' winter so the instrument panel was removed to the warmth of the kitchen (workshop annex) and the whole thing rewired.

Brakes and suspension were next with new dampers, calipers, flexy hoses, pipes, discs and pads attached with shiny Cheshire style fasteners.

Heater overhauled, tested and fitted. Instrument panel back in and more electricery, battery, cutout switch, starter and all other engine bay wiring installation done. Fuel hoses changed for ethanol resistant ones, coolant filled and BINGO, she runs, badly!

Blimey - thats some electrical redesign, B.C.! You'll have Geoff Cooper on your case about the blue crimps though....

Bloosh! Coolant everywhere! The bottom radiator hose split resulting in an impressive geyser. The water pump was leaking too so new main hoses and pump were fitted. I could not get the new pump to stop being incontinent and eventually found that the backplate was bent, straightened it and Bobs yer whatsit. Ran it up to temperature and a heater hose split! Right says I, new silicone hoses all round with new clips, try it again and it's HTT (RAF speak for hot to trot).

Moted and taxed, a short test run had the brakes sticking on which could be released by tapping the pedal. The servo was the culprit and was overhauled with new seals all round, brakes still sticking so the unit was replaced and that fixed that problem. Leaking brake master and clutch slave cylinders were overhauled with new seals and pipe work and I now have stupedous stoppers. New carpet and an MX5 seat fitted for the passenger and Curbs Coupe celebration 2014 was on! Yes we made it, had no issues, brilliant weekend and I love the overdrive!

I bought it to stop me from festering after I semi-retired and it's certainly doing that, there's always sommut t' tinker with, I've acquired several sets of different wheels during my scimmy affliction and have winter, road and sticky tyres on Dunlop composites, Wolfies, steels and Middlebridge so I'm good for any weather. More minor electricery saw LEDs in all the important little places, instruments, interior and side lights to minimise current draw. The RRBT is being prettied up so I've used the Coupe this past year and throughly enjoy it's relaxed cruising. There's still loads to do and I have a chassis in stock to prepare and a spare V6 in the shed half way through an overhaul, both destined for the Coupe. After I get the GTE back, I'll give the Se4 a grand tart up then I might slow darn a bit! See you soon, Crusty.

Cracking work to date, Crusty - the MB wheels really do suit the Coupe.

You? Slow down? I'll believe it when I see it!

Thanks for that. It's a beautiful colour which I'm keeping, a metallic blue, Porker shade I'm told and when it's had the chassis/bodywork done it will look great.
