Sorry for the thread resurruction... but Brilliant!

A genuine way to daily a retro.

Looking at that article you've managed to fit the Omega radiator and servo/master cylinder? Is there a build thread on this car?

Yes, I'd forgotten this existed. Have you still got it mr scimdiesel ? I hope so. I reckon that engine will go as well as an essex, last twice as long and use half the fuel, no bad thing

I had a '94 BMW 525 TDS Tourer with this engine in. I can't recommend getting the ECU re-chipped (actually two chips in this case and very easy to do as no soldering required) highly enough. They cost approx £75 for the chips and it is a real transformation.
The main bug-bear with this engine is the lack of low down torque before the turbo comes to life. The re-mapped chips greatly improve this and make the engine a lot more tractable across the entire rev range. Of course top end power is much improved and the car used to fly! It managed to upset many a boy racer up hills, being 'burnt off' by an old diesel estate!
It would appear that BMW purposely de-tuned this engine as the performance was embarrassing the 24valve petrol engined 525 (which I have also previously owned) of the time which simply would not do back then.

My poor scim has spent the last 2 years out side. It's been all legal but I've not really used it much. Today it failed it's mot. Nothing serious on the face of it. The brackets which hold the seat belt reals have expired. Tonight with a heavy hammer tried to undo the bolts which go down through the floor resulting in a lot of rust on the floor and a job which should have been a few hours is now some serious welding... I don't have the heart to do this work to this car. Would anyone be interested in buying the car compete or parts to do a serious performance diesel. I'm probably going to eBay it all in parts but I thought I'd see if some scimitar person was interested. Read back through the thread to see the goodies on this car.

copy...There's been a lot of good money and time spent. But lack of love and attension in recent years. I'm fairly sure if I broke it I'd get much more.. £1000 and take it away.
Tax free, all poly bushed, good chrome bumpers, 15" wolfies,and 2 spares, BMW 2.5 td with modern 5 speed box. Jag power lock diff. Rear disk conversion. Ebg green pads and discs up front 500 miles tops. Stainless hoses and cupronickel pipes. Loads of spares. Spax dampers. Rears (double adjust) would be 500 new. Different engine all on the v5 so all above board. Not so easy these days.!

Bad bits ... Needs some welding. Body works looking shabby. Interior shabby. Mot man advises slight play in front steering... He only notices every few years!!! Years of non original tweaks. My wife calls it bodging I call it finding practical solutions. Wheels could do with a balance. Speedo is not optimistic. It reads 10-15% slow.

The insurance is up on the 20th so I'll need to sorn it even though its got a new free tax disk. If your serious come and inspect and I plan the sale of bits. 07974223715 or tony_shakeshaft@spaxperformance.com

Congratulations. JIM. Good luck with SWMBO. Hope this car gives you the pleasure it has given me.. I feel slightly sick now. Every time I drive it I love it today was no exception. It will be sad to see it go. My wife will not! I hope I've showed you a true representation of the car.

So diseasel eventually came to the top of the "to do" list (well, it gazumped others!) and after fitting new seatbelt mounts and patching a hole in the side rail, I optimistically put it in for an MOT. Failed on another hole that I'd missed, rear brake imbalance (it has discs) and headlight alignment. Welded up the sill today and bled the brakes, the tester said he'd do the lights if I took the shrouds off for the retest.

First time I've driven it (to the MOT station) and it goes well. I want to do a lot of rewiring and a few jobs inside - more to follow :-)

Hopefully it'll be ready for DJ to drive to Classic Le Mans in a fortnight :-)

It'll be interesting to see what it does (mpg wise) on the run to Le Mans with DJ at the helm compared to mine - although I've got a ton of caravan on the back!

MOTd :-)

Reconnected a hose under the bonnet that had dropped off (vacuum/boost gauge) - and it's transformed the car! It was quick anyway but now it's rediculous!! Think I'll fit the gopro and go for a spin :mrgreen:

I think the turbo is vacuum controlled so that might make a difference!
