Long time without updates :-(

Spent the whole weekend removing the 3.62 Ford bolted LSD and fitting a 3.92 Quaife with new driveshafts

Then I found a sneak preview of RRs latest induction system

You don't know how right you are. Little one loves her sit in car walker and especially when daddy is making car noises to suit. We got kicked out the kitchen for doing doughnuts earlier and proceeded to J turn down the hall way before drifting into the living room.

A few bits done today but no photos

Traced the starting problem to a poor Earth at the starter - no idea what's changed but the jump lead test confirmed it. Ran a new cable and it's alive :-)

Decided not to fit the lightweight seat as it's not a straightforward swap - job for later.

Well the tyres eventually arrived at 1800 last night.

Out to the workshop, fitted and back home just after 2100 to watch walking dead on +1

car loaded and we pootled off to Curborough for the pre-season test day this morning.

Weather was kind for a change (we have cancelled due to snow previously!) and I quickly scrubbed the tyres in. Unfortunately it was obvious that I now had a tyre/bodywork interface problem that will need a little rectification.

More importantly, the combination of new tyres and new diff was amazing! Full throttle launch off the line would barely spin the wheels - and Curbs is known for it's poor traction off the line. I found myself pushing faster and faster into corners and had it not been for the recurring fuel issue the times would have been better. After a mojo busting 2016 I came home raring to get G97 out this season :D

Initially I thought that the fuel problem was the twin carbs again and the faster cornering was making it worse but Craig suggested it was starvation (as opposed to the flooding that you normally get from twin 40s mounted fore/aft). That made a lot of sense as previously the finish line hairpin was the worst corner but now it was the start line long left hander - previously the tank was less than half full and today it was brimmed to the top.

So, list of jobs:

Tweak wings for wheel clearance
Fit new drivers seat
Fit passenger seat
Fit passenger harness
Sort fuel tank vents
MOT
Weigh
Rolling road

Car looks great Jim, and your times from the test day were cracking too.

Can't wait to see what the figures are. You hoping to be out competing this year? Always good to see more CVH cars out.

It's not been MOT'd since 2010/2011 after the first rebuild, so it was good to see it pass yesterday :D

Hoping to get out this year Nick (been saying that for ages and something always seems to get in the way!) now the car feels competitive I really need to get some track time.

Rolling road went well today - carbs got tweaked to balance them properly and ignition timing moved back to standard (massively out) before doing a run.

Image

Started with a slightly disappointing 95BHP, so some cam swinging and ignition timing tweaking followed. Ended up at 110BHP at 6037rpm which I'm more than happy with, given how well it went on the test day. We actually got the power a little higher but only at silly rpms and at the expense of a few lbft torque, so we wound it back. Most importantly, we had a lovely flat torque curve throughout (can't remember final figure - 100+ though).

Nice one Jim. The cars got good balance and plenty of grip but was running rough at test day, the dyno setup should see it be a flyer! Watch out RR, Scimjims after ya ;-)

Solved the rough running with a vent valve on the tank - ran great all day today and now starts easier and revs faster.

Weigh in day - only needed 1.5 turns on the rear right Spring seat (pic below is without me sitting in it but the balance doesn't move much with me in - just the total weight :-))

Image

I make that 128.28 BHP/ton which gives me room for improvement later.

DJs SS1 - now dad's sprint car

Post by scimjim » Sat Mar 17, 2018 9:05 pm

So, nearly 12 months on and a different rolling road and set of scales, shows 118 BHP

And 846Kg

BE62985B-5335-4413-B5B6-7D6BD83CC1A2.jpeg (301.19 KiB) Viewed 695 times
Which makes 139.5 BHP/ton which is a bit annoying as I was aiming for the 135BHP/ton class in our championship
