Thanks guys, it's amazing what a difference it makes getting it (almost) one colour, then adding some garish decals.

A bit more wrapping done during last week, the nose this time:

Then this weekend I was booked in at Iain Daniels Classic Motorsport to get the wheel alignment & suspension set-up sorted.

First up was swapping out the LH front hub. I’d put new bearings in the original hubs ages ago & there was loads of play in the RHS. I got a replacement pair of hubs from Jim King & swapped out the RH, but not the LH as I thought it wasn’t too bad at the time. On re-visiting the LH, it seemed there was lots of play, so that got swapped too before doing wheel alignment, and is now fine. Quality used parts from Mr King!

I swapped in some new rear springs, as the borrowed ones I had in there were a bit soft. I also fitted light poundage springs to the front dampers to aid front ride height & wheel loading adjustments, there are also some little helper springs in there to stop the main spring rattling on full rebound.

After getting the ride height sorted, next up was getting the cambers to match side to side, which took a bit of effort, but we got there in the end. My trailing arms came from Batmobile & have rose joints in place of the bushes so have adjustment, so the rear toe was then aligned to the chassis centreline & set, finally followed by the front tracking.

We also put it on the scales, it’s not quite finished yet, so there are a few more bits to add on and I need to check the fuel level, but it weighed 835kg (262 bhp) without me in it. With me in the car, the weight distribution is 54% front 46% rear. Assuming the same fuel level (I will check), once more bits are fitted, I think it will come in somewhere around the 850kg mark.

551 A race oddity

Up to now, the only time I’ve driven the car is manoeuvring it in 1st & reverse gear. However, I’ve now completed a shake-down test!

I managed to get on another group’s “track day” at Curborough, I rocked up in the morning, most of the folks there were parked up in the area by the catering hut, so I was the first one down in the paddock.

I had a few little jobs to do before heading out on the track. My first run around was going to be a little tootle, but it all felt good, so I picked the speed up a bit. I did a couple of double laps before heading back to the paddock for a check over & to wind the dampers up from half to ¾. First impressions were that the handling was pretty good straight out the box. All the temperatures were good, the tyres were scrubbing up cleanly, it was holding all its fluids.

With a bit more fettling & running, I went up a notch on the front anti-roll bar stiffness, but then before the lunch break, I started getting a fuel surge problem, which was worst approaching the 1st bend after nailing it off the start. With a gentle start, it was better. Everywhere else it seemed ok.

Craig Hughes came over & arrived just after the lunch break. I did a few more runs with him as observer & made some minor tweaks to the brake balance & knocked the rear ride height down a tad (technical measurement). However, it was still surging. After a bit more investigation, I found the flexible pipe from the inlet manifold to the rising rate fuel pressure regulator had small splits where it was stretched over the pipe barb. I think the fuel reg. end was the culprit, but the manifold end was not looking good either, so both ends were snipped off as a temporary fix, but I will need to replace the pipe.

After taking it out again, the surge issue was gone, it was basically leaking boost & the fuel pressure was not rising with boost level. It pulled cleanly through the rev. range & went well, so I could also push a bit harder.

Then I handed over to Mr Hughes (Mr Competition SS1) to get his impressions & feedback. Craig managed to get quite sideways on the first run in to the Mole Hill, then got a bit of tail snap on the way out too. He did a couple of laps, then we loaded up & had a de-brief at the Fradley Arms.

I should have some in-car video, but it’s unlikely to be posted tonight. Craig has got some external video.

Generally, I think I need stiffer rear springs, I’ll go up another 25 lb/ft, probably then go up another notch on the front ARB at the same time to re-balance the car. It can be provoked in to power over-steer quite easily if your not careful with the throttle application. However, the starting point is pretty good. It handles nice & flat, didn’t bottom out, or dive under braking too much.

There are lots of little bits to finish off before I race it (some not so little if I can fit them in). Looking at the race calenders, it probably not going to make a race debut for roughly another month. A slight fly in the ointment came when I took it off the trailer to find a puddle of oil under the gearbox, so I will need to investigate that, it seemed like engine oil rather than gearbox oil, but I’ll have to wait & see.

Great start (hope the oil is an easy fix)

Annoyed that David Pattison didn’t get back to me though, I asked him if there was any chance of testing this week after my rolling road :(

He can be a bit tricky to get hold of. I just followed up my email & answer phone message until he was in & could answer the phone. He said it was all booked out this week, I got a last place on the day today, there were quite a few people there.
