After a good intentions on the Friday afternoon, the snowy cold weekend then drove me to hibernation. I think I need to stop making predictions and just report on actual action.

The better weather last weekend had me back on the car.

The I/C has been hanging off the top mounts only for a while, I knew the bottom mount was going to go down to the chassis front cross member, as there are 2 M8 weld nuts in a useful position. Nice and simple, but took longer than it should have.

The ali plate at the bottom of the I/C is to mount the exit ducting to, so that it can be taken out from the top for access without having to remove the I/C mounts. I’ve made some of the ducting bits, I need to make the rest & put them together.

The cross member had a couple of weld nuts with no thread, so they were just spacers. It came out for repair and bolted back in with all 8 bolts, rather than the 4 it’s had holding it in situ. At the same time, I ground back the centre damper mounts to maximise the clearance to the engine front pulley. Welded up the centre rear section of the cross member that is usually bridged, a little paint on the back face too. All this went back in the car and it looked like I’d done nothing.

The coolant rad. didn’t quite fit with the new I/C lower mount, an un-used lug on the cooling fan needed chopping off. I had previously bent the front flange of the radiator top channel rearwards, but this was too close to the bottom of the I/C, so I cut this off too to give space for the inlet ducting. The rad. was then bolted back in. I checked my ducting templates and started cutting out panels. I need more 1mm ali. Sheet too. No pics of this lot yet.

Whilst doing that, I alternated to some prep & priming of some panels & the screen surround.

Painters & polishers should look away now, as I’ve tried an experiment. I’m vinyl wrapping the panels, so I just need a sound smooth finish. My previously painted parts weren’t ideal with the colour top coat (cellulose), they could have done with some lacquer too. So I decided to miss out the colour part and lacquer over the primer to seal it. This will need a little flatting back with some fine wet & dry. However it looks remarkably ok, a bit like some of the flat greys on some current cars, like Mini’s (or an old grey Fergy tractor). Here it is repelling rain.

I only tried it on the screen surround & drivers door. The other parts are still just primer if the lacquer thing doesn’t work out.

As I'll be running slick tyres, I also need a set of wet tyres too, so I need a second set of wheels to mount them to. I picked up another set of Image split rims yesterday. I need to check the fit on the car and work out rim widths, as they are too narrow at the moment. So a little selling & buying of rim sections will be required.

That’s the only thing that puts me off vinyl wrap, the amount of prep you have to do (as in, as good as if it were being resprayed)... and i hate prep/patience/prep/patience/prep..!! :roll:

Yesterday, I pulled one of the new split rim wheels apart and measured up on the car to work out the wider rims sections I need.

This evening I got the heat gun out to stretch the rear LH wing. I'd split the top a while ago, spaced and filled it etc, but the car has been in the garage with the LH side close to the wall so didn't have access. I had the car out last weekend, so put it back with space to the LH. With the previously made block to sit over the inner stiffner flange, and a sash clamp up against the roll cage back-stay, it was time to heat up wing & jack it out.

The bolts sticking down underneath will be chopped off when I take the wing off (the other 3 wings are done, this one got left for the same reason as above)

There should be the same space as the RH rear wing now for the 10" wide wheel & slick tyre

I've fitted a few riv-nuts, where the original threads from the thread formning screws have given out. I ran through and did them all on the front, the RH rear I did at the weekend before re-fitting the wing. Just the rear LH wing to do when the wing comes off

I flatted back the lacquer on the screen surround & drivers door and did the first bit of vinyl, as I already had the heat gun out.

The wrinkly bits at the inside edge will go, there's a wire underneath that will cut through the centre & outer bits to give a clean butt joint (hopefully).

The orginal screen surround moulding will be going back on to cover the edges / gap.

It looks ok on the small bit I've done. The door will be a better test.

My view is that the car has got to look ok on a race track, it won't stand up to concourse scrutiny!

The door turned out ok, so I guess it did work as intended.

Other than the A-pillar bit, it was the easiest panel so far. I don't suppose the wings will be as straight forward...
