Exhaust partially fitted. I removed the turbo elbow so I could remove the seized nuts on the square section. This necessitated some use of power tools, reciprocating saw to cut the original down pipe in half so it could be removed. Anyhow, new kidney and square gaskets fitted, down pipe fitted, rear box hung, centrepipe still on the garage floor. Unfortunately whilst unpacking it, I found a crack (see photo). It looks like it split during the bending process. It was covered with the manufacturers packing, so there's no way it would've been noticed before it was dispatched. Nigel is sending a replacement ASAP, always great service from QRG. Plenty of other things to get on with though.

Secondary throttle return spring fitted.
I can't find anywhere in the regs where it says you have to have one. But I sort of remember reading it in there in the distant past. However, it's a good safety feature, so I've fitted one.

Be surprised if it's been removed, probably in one of the other sections rather than sprint/hills section but worthwhile nonethelesa

Within touching distance of finishing now.
To do;
Rear tow strap to fix.
Rear wheel arch brackets to make and fix (I'd like to push out the arches by about 5mm, which is doable with a bracket)
Pull dash board apart and remove the remnants of an alarm system that is flattening the battery in 48hrs. Also want to make sure that it's not wired in to anything that may stop the engine.
Running very short on time now. I've literally got about 5 free-days off between now and Croft on the 2nd April, and two of those are spoken for with the Curbs test and a power run with Ric Wood the day after. It's very nip and tuck, but I'm sure I'll get there. As I suspected, taking it to Northampton MS isn't an option. If anything goes pear shaped in the mean time, I'm going to struggle. I've bought back the car's original engine that I sold to GP, just need to get it 200 miles North, and I have a couple of spare MK2 gearboxes should I kill the MK1 box that's currently fitted. So contingency planning is in full swing too
The observant may notice that the silicone hose from throttle body is now a 60-51mm step-down elbow and not a super stretched 51mm elbow. It's the little things.....

You should have asked earlier (currently drinking coffee in Heswall).
I may be able to bring the Engine to Curbs test day for you?

Doh......
Been a bit too busy with work to organise anything.
If it’s a possibility for you to bring it up Jim, that would be great. Cheers.
Happy to provide compensation in the form of folding stuff.

Hi Steve noticed a few posts up you have fitted a battery isolator under the bonnet. Is this remote operated or just manual under the bonnet?
For roadgoing i think it is just recommend that there is another way to turn off the car is this why you have fitted?
I was thinking of fitting one as at present only got the ignition key off.

It’s just a convenient battery isolator. I was considering putting a cable to it for remote switch off. But as I’ve not wired the ignition through it, the engine continues to run if it’s switched off on the go. So my ignition switch is currently my only method of switch off. It’s on my “not essential yet” jobs list.

HELP HELP HELP HELP
PLEASE
So this morning I thought I'd ticked off all the jobs on the list. I even added a new one, which was to reverse the top ball joints back to standard direction, as the added negative camber had made the steering a bit twitchy.
I then went out for a good run in the hills. The car was performing like a dream, loads of power and torque, twitchy steering fixed etc etc etc......
Then.......
It suddenly started running as rough as hell. It felt a bit like a coil breakdown (without the bangs) or fuel starvation. The only way to get it to move along along was by keeping the revs high.
I came home and did the following (testing at each step to see if I'd fixed it), which made no difference at all :-
Changed the coil
Changed the fuel pump
Changed the HT leads
Changed the distributor (though thinking about it, I didn''t change the dizzy cap)
Removed the fuel filter
Bypassed the intercooler by fitting the old cross pipe between the turbo and throttle body.
Checked the oil for water contamination.
Checked to see if there were any bubble coming up through the coolant.
Removed the cam cover to have a look if the tappet rails were loose (I've had that before which gave similar symptoms)
Fiddled with every wiring connection
I'm now in danger of putting a bloody match to it
Where else should I be looking ?
AFM and dizzy cap are next on the list.
I have a video of the engine running that I'll upload to youtube shortly.
