Strange position of earthing - SE5a

Post by scimifunze » Sun Mar 22, 2020 6:42 pm

Sorry folks, have a last question today, before I get me an Corona at the TV couch...

I don `t like that re-fit earthing (see picture) since it is a) on the hottest and most rusty point that cannot be a good solution - and b) it is attached only by a tapping screw to the alloy heat shield (and allready loose).

Since the workshop manual is not providing self elucidating pictures from all earthing of the Scimi - could somebody support me with pictures and / or description of all earthing points at the SE5a. I really would like to install everywhere good quality flex earthing cables (woven copper nickled).

That should be a braided Earth cable and is for radio suppression, not an electrical circuit. There’s one both sides and one on each suspension unit (which is also the brake pad warning light circuit).

The main earth goes from the battery to the nose support beam (behind the headlight) - many people run another cable from there to the engine front cover.

There’s a short braid from the chassis to the starter motor.

There’s a long braid that goes from the gearbox crossmember up through the floor to the heater box, behind the dash, then up the A post to the roof mounted aerial. All of the instruments and the radio have dedicated Earths (for lighting or indication) but You might find some additional cables on that braid :D

At the back, the lights are all earthed at one end of the chassis (I think the wiper motor has a dedicated Earth in the loom from the front).

Dear Jim,
thanks a lot for the comprehensive elucidation - that helps a lot.
I will check all of these during the next days (as I have a lot of time due corona shut-down).

Thanks!
