Gear Stick

Post by rjudcsx » Fri Mar 06, 2020 9:54 am

Hello everyone , new to this forum , purchased a 5a a few weeks ago [1974 man/od SUL 139N] and as mentioned in my Introduction Post the delivery driver somehow snapped the gear stick 1inch from its base . I have spoken to a few people and what I predicted to be an easy search for a Ford part [3000 Capri ,Granada ect ] has now become a little more complex as I have been informed that the stick is a Reliant one specific to this application. A picture can be seen in the Autobooks workshop manual page 67 "later type gearbox". Can anyone confirm that no other stick will fit but a Reliant one ,and if so, does any one have a second hand one in the shed that I might buy ? Thankyou all for your help, Richard J .

It’s not Reliant specific at all (don’t believe everything you read on Facebook :D ) the only time I snapped one (on the brake rollers during MOT!) I found a spare in a scrapyard on a Capri (that was 1992 though :D )

Still quite rare unfortunately.

Where are you?
I have a spare used one.
And I think I still have a complete unit with the base ( but will have to look).

that was for an early 5 gearbox and I gather it is a remote one that is needed

Richard, two threads have morphed on this topic, as i mentioned on the other thread I have one, I know GW had some they bought them from me I suppose they may have sold them. If Mark can't locate his, I will locate one of my spares.

Good Evening every one, thank you all those who have offered to look for a spare 5a remote gear stick to replace my broken one ,I look forward to a possible solution being found. In the meantime I need to consider a back up plan; as mentioned in a previous members post some have been sleeved and welded. Can the stick be extracted on its own ,avoiding the process of removing the whole remote unit [ levers, shaft, selector rods ect ] if so, could any one give a bit of an overview ? I am also a little concerned that the break in the shaft is directly in line with the top housing ,once welded could I find that my lateral gear stick movement is restricted to the point of being unable to select a gear [particularly reverse]. Its been a long weekend at my part time job supporting special needs adults, my ability to conceptualize this problem is some what impared [a bit like my spelling !] Thank you Richard .

To get to the gearstick securing pin requires two people. you need to remove the centre console and the 3 nuts/bolts that hold the alloy base down (there’s then enough slack to lift the whole lot clear of the transmission tunnel). Unfortunately that means getting underneath to hold the nuts and more importantly, re-align the overdrive inhibit switch when you put it back together.

Here is my spare lever.
Never actually seen a broken one so don`t know where the weak spot is and weather they can be welded on the car.

Morning Mark ,that's the one. I was told two " theories " why they snap .1 It is a deliberate flaw put into the lower part of the stick to ensure occupants are not impaled in the case of an accident ! 2 The incidents of breakage appear to peak during the winter [temp ?] However I am aware of how myths can become facts ;I had a" friend" who found the lost Bugatti 57 sc Atlantic once ! Back to reality , is the stick for sale and if so how much would you like ? Thankyou for all the effort you are putting into this issue . Richard .

Hi Richard
It cost me £25 when I bought it many years ago as a spare, bearing in mind its not been used for at least 10 years it should have a lot less wear than a used one off a current car.

Regards Mark

Mine went at the pivot point (where the nylon bush sits) - there’s a sharp radius top and bottom and I think it was just a fatigue fracture after years of being forced sideways, forwards and backwards?

I would suggest a good percentage of snapped gearsticks are due to drivers having difficulty in selecting gears due to wear in the linkage between the remote gearlever and the gearbox. Another sign of linkage wear is a widening of the alloy housing either side of the gearstick, again a result of a driver forcing the vehicle into gear.
