Manual / Auto shell

Post by speedy555 » Sat Mar 02, 2019 10:12 pm

I'm pretty sure that a 5a Auto has a different transmission tunnel than a manual, but what about a 1970 se5 with 2 rod box and the auto version?
Thanks :)

Yep, the parts list shows manual and auto bodyshells (early and late, LHD and RHD) for SE5 and various manual/overdrive/auto shells for SE5a.

I’ve seen at least one converted by simply glassing in the trans tunnel around the gearstick from the opposite type?

It may well be that as Jim says the gear lever hole is different , it may also be that a auto shell,s bulkhead is not drilled for a slave cylinder.

The transmission tunnel is physically a different shape for each gearbox.

I once converted an auto 6a to manual overdrive and found the mould line for the clutch master cylinder hole when I took the paint off.

Manual / Auto shell

Post by oilrag » Sun Mar 03, 2019 8:18 am

This topic is of great interest to me ,im seriously contemplating switching my 5a to C3 auto ,so much so i now hopefully have all the bits i need, but i have'nt as yet attempted to do a trial fit or indeed measured up the tunnel. Both motor and box are now removed.
Can i ask please what i need to alter/change body-wise to make this conversion possible (save for the pedal box alterations) ,im sure somebodies done this already.
I assumed the gear lever/ shifter positions would be different and would need a little glass-work but confess i hadnt reckoned on the tunnel being a different shape.
Thanks .
G

If you look at the shape of the gearstick mounts - that’s the shape the tunnel needs to be. The auto is much flatter than the overdrive. The position fore/aft isn’t too critical as the rods/cable are adjustable on all of the boxes apart from the early overdrive (which has a fixed position stick anyway). I think it’s only the very first SE5 that have a physically bigger tunnel to take the auto.

Ahhh ,thanks Jim ,,thats not too tough to sort,i had visions of remodelling the bellhousing area as C3 does have a more gradual fall away from block mount flange compared to say a 3 rod o/d box .
Cheers

Good Morning all,
Im presently restoring a 1970 se5 and my intentions are to convert from auto to manual using a 2rod O/D gearbox
Does this mean the transmission tunnel is different or as Jim says just a case of the gearstick position is different.
thanks

The auto was launched in 1970 (451729) according to TSAIF (I suspect it was much earlier though), so despite the SE5 parts list not stating chassis numbers for the change, I’d say that’s a starting point. Anything earlier “may” need more tunnel mods but I’ve never seen one next to the other to confirm.

450434 is (now) auto...so even ones pre-official changeover can be converted.
