SE5 chassis repair just arrived

Post by AJL Electronics » Wed Feb 20, 2019 9:20 am

I have been cutting away the scrap metal on the offside and have had to go some way to find anything to weld to. I have also found holes in places that I wasn't expecting, like the tube that carries the rear jacking point etc.

The tube looks worse from inside. It is also full of crap and old underseal so my idea of driving in a smaller diameter pipe is not going to work well. I suppose that I could take out part of the external body and drive something in just so far. However, ignoring the owner's budget (if it were my car) I would complete the side rail etc both sides then lift the body to get at the rest of it. Not something that I think would float the owner's boat, but the way to get it just so as otherwise I will have to carve away most of the interior!

Apparently there is a sticky for body removal but I can't find it. Could someone point me to it please?

Thanks Phil. James Holland said : "Bloody ages. Probably several days. 3-4. It allows for removing all shitty bolts and cutting others. Removing doors/glass/interior to make it lighter. Otherwise you would need some strong lifting hoists".

So now I am waiting for the owner to give me his further instructions because I can't do a body off job or even carve the interior about in his budget.

New parts tacked in on the offside. I couldn’t do any more because the helmet batteries went flat on me. So now I have to wait for new batteries.

Went to see this today and it’s a lot nicer than the pictures suggest. The rear tube, despite being holed, is generally solid. It obviously needs the standard B post base repair and Andy has done the side rails etc but it’s going to be a nice car I reckon.

Well I am worried about it. That tube carries a lot of torsion from the suspension. Although I can plate the left and right sections it will still be weak and I can't easily do inside the bracket so it would be even weaker than the plated tube. My inclination is to replace the tube and bracket and then the body doesn't need to come off next year as the chassis will be full strength. However it isn't my money to spend of course.

I am advised that the tube isn't freely available and that I should cut up a scrap SE6 series propshaft.

Not sure where to go from here, my reputation and the owner's safety is at risk if I can't make a good job of it.
