How do you retro fit Rear Seatbelts to an SE5 ?

You need (or need to manufacture) the 4 metal straps that go to the chassis, they have captive nuts on the belt end and a hole the other. They use the same long bolt as the tow bar.

The straps and towbar go to the axle droop stop brackets.

also look at the blue se5 once owned by Martin port from Classic and Sportscar magazine. He had rear belts professionally installed by quikfit satfety belt services. He posted pictures on here. it involved some fabrication of plates into the little storage areas in the boot (where the jack is), which went up through the trim. A picture paints a thousand words, but I can't find them!

The parts list suggests the inners outers are the same but the outer inners have differing part numbers (ie 3 part numbers in total) but from memory I thought the two outers were identical?

Diagonal/3 point inertia have been fitted many times - normally by mounting the inertia reel on the boot floor just behind the seat as there’s no strong point at shoulder height. IIRC Martin had a structure added to raise the third mounting point BUT it was something like £800.

sorry Jim, yes i see that now on your parts list scan, strangely it differs from mine which only shows and lists the outers, hence my query. Mark may have a couple spare ( fingers crossed ) anyone else got anymore ? or am I fabricating...........again

That’s not a scan of my parts list, it’s a copy of the page on GWs site. Unfortunately it has early and late parts mixed up, so is often misleading.

Shouldn’t be too hard to fabricate - or find off a breaker?

How do you retro fit Rear Seatbelts to an SE5 ?

Post by turbster » Tue Mar 20, 2018 11:10 am

I've been thinking about how to do this recently and I was thinking some kind of frame behind the rear seats with a removable section for when the seats are folded would be the solution. I've looked at the ones in the link above, and to me the strap on the buckle seems too long, and the mounting point of the shoulder belt seems too low. I definitely no expert, I'm just basing that on having fitted plenty of race harnesses to the instructions and just from seeing how seat belts are actually fitted in cars. My idea would use a 4 point as per the fronts with a guide which I imagine would be near the height of the bottom of the rear window replicating the distance between the base of the seat and the guide in the front.
