Classic/Vintage Scimitar GTE SE5/a racing

Post by Pepe » Tue Feb 20, 2018 10:02 pm

Hello guys,

I was wondering if there was kind of a club racing scene back in the late seventies or eighties, that used the Scimitar as a powerful, well balanced car, probably cheap to by and good to tune (large stock engine with classic carburettor tuning, etc...)

Especially interested in any specs or so, so one could re-build such a racer propably...

Important: base car has to be road legal, meaning it needed to be drivable on regular roads and tuned with classic/period tuning parts like Suspension /w adjustable bases, Carb tuning, exhaust / intake grinding, larger valves, larger carbs, Multicarbs, rollcages, wheels seats etc.. etc.. etc...

Have a look at one of the other threads running with loads of pics of scimitars and Sabres racing in the 70s. They tended to be road cars, no cages or harnesses, showroom stock

are you building a race look road car or a roadgoing race car?

If it's going to be raced the specific regulations will dictate the modifications allowed.

I think Craig is referring to Paul Turnbull's project thread here:

viewtopic.php?t=17091&start=960

There is loads of info if you browse through the Competition section, mostly in "Sprints & Hillclimbing" but also the other areas in Competition.

Also there are competition car build threads in the Project area.

Hi guys

thanks for the replies... Will read thru them.

Basically I am interested in builing a roadlegal racecar. It should not be something that doesn't need to be trailered around everywhere, but tuned to what was road legally possible and kind of period correct.

Something better or more carbs
rollcage
lighter
good suspension
Still collecting ...

Personally I would choose a championship/disaplin then build the car to suit.

It's a sad fact of life that good race cars make lousy road cars. Sevens and Elise's get very close.

I agree with what is said above, you need a clear goal and plan before you do anything. Highly tuning an Essex is pretty pricy, compared to a modern like a Zetec, or turbo such as an SS1

If you want to stay roadgoing you could sprint in something like the Aldon Championship out of Prescott like the Louch family and Trevor Shortt .

Christian lives in Germany Nick.

will the TUV test restrict your modifications or are you okay as soon as you gain "classic" status?

basic mods would be better tyres, height and rate adjustable dampers, camshaft, ported and matched head/inlet, better exhaust.

I suspect you may be restricted by your seat when wearing a helmet so might be forced into a lightweight single skinned GRP seat? You will want a harness that you can remove for road use (a harness is a pain in a road car :-)) so mounting eyes need to be fitted. rollcage will be expensive but necessary IMHO.
