Metal Bracket / u channel in nose section

Post by another newbie » Tue Oct 20, 2015 11:37 am

Good Morning All,

I was wondering if someone can help me. I don't have the metal bracket / u channel for the nose section of my car, I think I might have thrown what was left of it (A lot of brown rust flakes painted black) out many years ago.

Is there any chance somebody could furnish me with some overall dimensions and positions for the bumper bracket holes from one. I'm quite fortunate that I work in our prototype workshop that has the metal fabrication shop so I could have a play in there.

If somebody could do that for me it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi Alex,
I can't help with dimensions etc but I think you need to get a replacement in there relatively quickly as your "nose" isn't currently supported!!
As far as I can remember, the front nose cone will not be supported anywhere from the front suspension turrets forward. Not a real problem if you're not driving the car, but you could end up with fractures or cracks of the grp/gelcoat/paint over the front wheel arches if you are still driving it.

I remember on my 5a rebuild when I had removed all the front end metalwork (radiator tinwork, spare wheel tray etc and the front cross member) and lent on the nose to lean into the engine bay, the bodywork was observed to move enough to flex the front wheel arches in and out...

Cheers

I'm all right at the moment because my nose isn't currently attached to the car :)

The front end of my car had numerous repairs done it on, none of them seemingly great. The LH corner was sitting slightly lower and farther back than the RH corner and the profiles on the repairs didn't match the rest of the car.

When I was scraping the paint off I took chunks of filler off nearly 1cm thick on the repairs, so I chopped the whole front end off from the suspension uprights and have another complete nose section to put on which looks 1000 times better.

Thanks for the advice though and I shall bear that in mind

Aha! That's fine!...... Wasn't aware that the nose cone was off the car!
Good luck with the repairs and post up some photos when you're able!
Cheers

If you have dimensions that would be great. I can have a play in our fabrication shop or speak nicely to someone in there :D

I'm sure numerous people would be interested in the dimensions as it seems very hard to find a used one that hasn't turned to dust.

Many thanks

We will need a new one for ALJ - so dimensions should enable William to make one up at college in a free afternoon.

I believe they are available new and galvanised from QRG, but obviously the cost is going to be rather more than fabricating one yourself, if you have the facilities :)

I've got an unused one which seems to be a heavier duty replacement (as it uses M12 bolts for the bumper brackets as opposed to the original 1/2" UNF studs) - it didn't want to fit in my 5a but that might have been down to the fact the nose was unsupported for about 20 years..I managed to (just) fit a second hand one in the end but still took some excessive action with a trolley jack!

Mine had rotten away, I believe it secures the front bumpers doesn't it? Mine are seized solid!

In that case, my bumpers are supported by nothing but air and remains of rust!
