SE5a Dashboard removal

Post by DarrylWebb » Sat Sep 12, 2015 8:28 am

To remove the 5a dashboard carcass, how do you remove the bolt behind the glovebox? It's so inaccessible I'm hoping I'm missing some secret access panel.

There's at least one access hole in the side of the glovebox - peel back the carpet inside to reveal.

If you insist :D

To get the dash out of an SE5a, there are 8 fittings to remove (assuming any previous owner has put them all back).

6 of them are into captive fittings : handy, but a PITA if they seize and pull the captive fittings out. The captive fitting is a nut welded to a small steel plate affixed with 2 rivets, so can easily pull out if you force it. Be Careful!
7/16" sockets or spanners through-out BTW.

On the right, through the carcass into the A-post area of the shell are 2 bolts.

Image

Similar on the left. In this case that's a rather large 'adjustment' hole.

Image

Behind the instruments, a bolt goes through here. The bolt also holds a metal P-clip for the wiring loom. This makes getting onto the bolt head a pain : Knuckle joint and long extension required.

Image

Mirrored on the left another bolt, but now it's behind the glove-box. No need to grow a second wrist : peel back the carpet in the glove box to reveal. Knuckle joint and long extension needed again get onto this one properly. Take great care with this one. If this seizes, getting power tools in is going to be tricky.

Image

A couple of easy fitting 'cos you can get onto the front and back of these. A steel strap from the bulkhead bolts up to this hole right of the air vent.

Image

Ditto on the left.
