I would be more inclined to think ignition relay Rodger. With the added bonus that if it is the relay it's a nice easy cheap fix.

Babe the GTC number 229 and and Smurfett the 1400 SST. Ness the vw t4 van/dayvan/camper

That wouldn't explain a possible electrical-based misfire though..

Nor would it explain the fact that after a few restarts, due to the engine stalling at low rpm, the windows/wipers have now started working again, and the engine was running a bit better. :)
I agree, if it was only windows/wipers, the relay would be the prime suspect
