How many coats does it take to spray a body repair?

Now up front, I will warn you. This Is a trick question.

Had a fight with a car park recently in my daily driver... look, it was giving it large and I'd just about had enough, all right? Anyway, I lost. So, off to the local body shops to get prices, and one of them came back with over £200, just for paint - TWENTY LITRES of it!!

Now, I know this is nobby East Grinstead full of folks who hate themselves for not being posh enough to live in Tunbridge Wells, but even so, £200 just for paint seems a little OTT to me. If we assume the front bumper and the wing together come to about one metre square, and if we assume a coat of paint is one thou' of an inch thick (and these are over estimates) then that equates to about TWENTY coats of paint. And that's just paint, mind, labour costs extra. Even if half the paint is wasted or lost in overspray and rubbing down, that still leaves us with TEN coats of paint.

I've had the repair done by another place now, at a sensible price and very nice it is too, considering the technical matter of the bumper being split at a mounting point, but just wanted to do a sanity check before I respond to this particluar quote.

But what? They saw the car on 11 March. I had 5 quotes in from other places. So I phoned 2 days later - oh, yes, sorry, we'll get it to you asap. Then silence, for nearly a month, until today, out of the blue, the quote appears. If they didn't want the job, why bother quoting now?
