Just incase you've never heard it....but Steve McQueen was not able to do the bike jump due to insurance etc. But if you look closely, he dressed up as one of the germans and joined the chasing group!

Not in Le Mans he didn’t :D

The Guy Martin recreation of the jump had an eye-witness claim that McQueen did do the jump off camera :D

Watching it now - need a very big screen to read the narrative though!

Well I learnt a lot last night - even stayed up and watched Hunt v Lauda again afterwards :D

I was 4 when Le Mans was released and living in Germany where we had one English Channel on TV :D

Never knew about the car crash with the actress, his close shave with the Mansons, the driver who lost his leg in a crash, etc, etc....

I found it informative, interesting too.
Yes, it came as news to me that David Piper lost his leg during filming.

I must watch on IPlayer.....some little while ago I had a non-running '67 Velosolex 3800 (French moped) to sell - my friend, who now lives over in S.W France, bought it off an old fella ( I was there at the time) & I ended up buying it & another restored & running Velo. 5000 - that I still have & could be persuaded to sell..
When I wanted to sell the '67 one I did some research & discovered that McQueen used one as a 'pitbike' to get around the location during filming of 'Le Mans'.... I only wish that I could have proved it to be the same one as in these photos.

So, which is more exhilarating 300 BHP or 0.6 BHP?

Really!...That's brilliant. The one I have is still French registered. Who is it being insured with &, dare I ask, how much does it cost......I bought a helmet off Trevor Short at Curborough, last year, as I thought that I might keep this one & use it - the great thing is that they weigh no more than the traditional old bike with rod brakes & chainguard etc., so can be easily transported.

The scim and the solex need slightly different driving techniques. The default setting on a solex throttle is wide open.
