Looking for breakdown cover and finding it’s difficult .

Need to cover myself and the wife for any car with roadside , homestart and recovery back home if it can’t be fixed .
But I also need to recover the car and caravan if the car breaks down back to my home .
Problem is , some cars are over 16 years old and that’s the problem .
So for years been with the RAC but just found out I am not covered to recover a caravan as a well as a car . And I could be towing with a car over 16 years old as well .

So not RAC or Green flag , could go with a caravan / motorhome policy but they don’t cover older tow cars .

Any thoughts ?

if you are with camping and caravan club rac will cover caravans, but they are damn expensive,
they tried to take £300+ out of my account the other year without asking,
I left and went to autoaid,

I don't think there's a tow car age limit with the C&M Club (Caravan Club as was) via Mayday?

I have towed with classic vehicles for many years, racing bike trailer, horse trailer, tractor and car transport and caravan. I have never been let down by the AA although they won't take horses/livestock, so have also had a horsebox insurance piggy backed on the AA cover as they work together. It is expensive, but kept lower than the RAC by ringing them and saying I'll go elsewhere! I've had my money's worth as they have repatriated my Healey from the iom classic rally and my Ducati sps from Italy with no extra cost.

I was with Britannia Rescue privately and still with them through our Nationwide bank - never had to be rescued so don't know how well they perform in that role. Cover is for any car you are driving.

I left and went to autoaid,
I've used AutoAid and am still with them. Excellent so far. I was towing during the trip, but the breakdown was on a day away without the trailer, so they recovered only the car. I didn't try to get the trailer taken too as I had other means to get it home, so I can't comment on the caravan issue. But they cover so much on a modular basis you can pretty much build your own bespoke cover. Worth a phone call, and literally over a hundred pounds cheaper than the typical AA/RAC prices.

Britannia cover the driver in any car, even if he's not driving that car. I've used then several times over the years, including at least twice I can recall when I was in someone else's car. In fact, as I recall once I wasn't actually in their car, I was in my own car but travelling with them. Didn't matter, BR still took them under my policy. Could never fault BR, and only left because of price.

Same as Peter Freeman I'm with Britannia through Nationwide Plus account - costs £13 per month. If you open it as a joint account you both get cover for any vehicle you are in. Covers Europe as well. I researched cover for my motorhome and other vehicles and Britannia got good reviews on a moho website where some members had to be rescued abroad. The £13 per month also gives you worldwide travel insurance and mobile phone insurance. I changed after the RAC "rewarded" my loyalty by hiking up the premium hoping I wouldn't notice. The account also gives good interest rates on deposits up to £2500, which also pays a big chunk of the £13 per month fee if you leave the maximum in.

PS. I am in no way connected with Nationwide - I just hate being ripped off and like a good deal !

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned this thread yet : viewtopic.php?f=17&t=38672

Most of it still seems to be current as far as overall experiences go.

Swapped from RAC to AA many years ago and fairly happy since - I’ve been recovered in older cars with trailers (and another car on) too.

RAC Arrival via the camping & caravanning club. Covers me and the wife in any car, plus any length of trailer or caravan. They will also fix issues on the caravan, if they cant fix you then take you to the campsite if needed and will bring you back home after your holiday. Also if you are out for the day they will return you to the caravan if requested and let you pack up before taking you home. Costs me £103 a year.

Yes looked at that but as you say you have to be a member of the Camping and Caravan club . Unfortunately we are members of the Caravan and Motorhome club . How much is the membership?

Thanks all it’s given me some leads to look at .

I think it's £40. But there was a deal where you got free membership if you took out the recovery. We find the membership worth it TBH as more than make it back on insurance discounts, and at go outdoors & mountain warehouse

As a member of Caravan & Motorhome Club for many years, used their green flag Mayday service several times both with classic cars alone and with modern car plus caravan and have had excellent service.
