That’s pretty much true - Historic (free) tax status kicks in in April AFTER the 40 calendar years. MoT exemption however is 40 years after registration date. Nothing like things being aligned..

I'd guess they're not aligned because historic status is a "taxation" requirement, so changes at the start of the tax year, whereas MOT requirements are simply "motoring" changes, so can change at any time?

Where did that info come from? I didn't think build date was shown on DVLA with that level of precision - on the V5 and the computer enquiry system it only says "build year 1978", or whatever? So they may just be saying 31/12/78 on the basis of "anytime during 1978? In fact the *actual* build date for a car first registered during Jan '78 could have been in '77, but if it was "declared new at first registration" it would have been assigned "1978" as a build year. If you want a definitive build date, what are the first two characters of your chassis number?

I asked DVLA to put my build date in the Additional Information section on V5 and they refused. First reg. date rules, OK...…………...

Thats what the women at the DVLA told me something about Reliant not giving a manufacture date so they just put it to last day of the year still cant see why thay cant use first reg date

Ok, well the breakdown of the "7K" is that the "7" = 1977, and the "K" = October. So your car was actually built in October 1977 (which, if you think about it, makes sense for a car that was registered/sold in Jan 78.

Reliant *do* state build date, DVLA have just decided to ignore it. TBH it makes little difference whether DVLA decide to use the "Date of first registration" or a totally fictitious date derived from the end of that year, it still makes it a 1978 car for tax purposes :(

Incidentally, the other two digits that you've given "52", are the paint code, so your car was originally painted in Quartz Green (according to my list, there's a typo in Don's book, which suggests it's Russet Red)

Addition to the above - coincidentally, Chris has just confirmed in this post that 53 is Russet Red, so that confirms yours as quartz green :)

originally painted in Quartz Green
It has been sprayed still green but as of yet not been able to find the colour match. I will have to go to local paint factors to get the colour microscope on it

That's the best bet for a good match, as whatever it is, it will probably have faded a bit since it was last done
