New Scimitar Book Published today!

Post by drcdb15 » Fri Aug 31, 2018 11:12 am

Elvis Payne's latest tome is released today.

"The Reliant Scimitar", £15.95 in hardback from Amazon. I'm not promoting this, you understand, just alerting folks to something that might be of interest. I have no idea if it's any good, though I did find his earlier history of Reliant Motor Co very readable.

If anyone gets a copy of this latest perhaps you might report back to us what you think. I don't suppose it will challenge Don Pither for authority, but a fresh perspective from 20-odd years on might be interesting.

Having corresponded with Elvis over the small sports section and done some proof reading for the new book, I can assure you there is a lot of interesting material contained within along with "fresh" information and thoughts from those that were involved.
With such books it's impossible to be 100% spot on but this is well researched and certainly worth the read.

My first impression is that drcdb15 (Chris) should be offered some beer mats. :)

My copy arrived today. I've had a quick glance through and it's an interesting potted history of the Reliant Scimitar, especially around the many development proposals that never saw the light of day.

There are a few errors/typos such as " .. SE4b introduced in late 1966" but it's still a worthy addition to the collection.

Originally listed at £15.95 on Amazon, this has gone up to £19.95, then "down" to £19.26. Other sellers are listing at £19.95 or £19.26 - one other apart from Amazon - but the star is WH Smith currently listing at £13.96. The catch is, they won't sell it... local shop says buy on-line, website won't accept an order, and nice man on the phone tells me they are "de-listing" it... Excuse me? say I, it hasn't been published the length of a month yet and you're taking it off sale?? Yup, says he, it happens...

Abe, Wordery, Waterstones etc seem highly variable as to whether it's in stock, back order, no longer available, etc etc - all very sporadic.

So if anyone else has managed to get a copy yet, hang onto it, it may go the way of Don Pither's 'Forebears' !

Mine arrived Sunday.

Page already torn courtesy of little one getting over excited with a book of cars.

Nice to get a mention at the front and I spy one of my cars is pictured.

So far very enjoyable read. A real in-depth book on the workings of the Reliant company and the development of the sports models.

New Scimitar Book Published today!

Received my copy a couple of days ago after waiting couple of weeks despite it being quoted as in stock £15.87 free delivery from the Book Depository via Amazon. I am a bit disappointed, I supplied Elvis with a few photos and information on the car (42 ENX) but it has been credited as a Sabre 6 in the photos but is actually a Sabre 4. Its a shame as once a mistake has been put into print most people will take it as fact. But to be positive another book can only be a good thing for the marque.

Agree on the positive side but also agree that there’s some annoying errors in there.

I don't know how you got this - Wordery web site tonight is telling me it's out of stock!

However...

Smith's seem to have sorted out their issues, and are listing it again, at £13.96. Delivery is free if you can pick it up at your local store. Typical, thought I, weeks later and still they haven't updated or corrected their website - but it turns out they have, and I was able to place an order. Whether it arrives or not remains to be seen, but it's looking hopeful so far - all the right payment links and confirmatory emails etc. This seems still to be the lowest price amongst the regular suppliers.
