Does anyone know anything about se5a TIL2921

Post by Laters » Sun Feb 18, 2018 5:22 pm

In my communication with the current owner he appears to be a ok guy who bought the car as it is.
He has answered pretty much every question I have asked him & sent photos of everything I have asked for.
He has said that the least he wants is £1500 for it which in my opinion is quite a lot considering the short mot and running issue (or should I say non running).
That's not taking the 1970 se5a thing into account as that's a whole new ball game.

I asked on the forum about the car as there was something that just didn't seem right & at the price he is asking for the car didn't want to take any risks I didn't need to.
I should have realised it was too early for a 5a but the non age related plate threw me.

Thanks for the offer gtcse8 the car I am looking for has to be a automatic (my other half has a auto only licence) plus I prefer to drive a auto these days too.

Fingers crossed I might have just found what I am looking for, double fingers crossed we can sort out a deal :D

For GB registered vehicles, NI registrations are classed as “not age related” as there’s no definite identifier to age (unlike GB suffix, prefix, then mid-numerical registrations)
I did not know that. And you're correct about no definite identifier : I had to look up the exact details as over here we can't even clearly ID the year of registration from the reg.

Apparently this auto 5a is a 1970 car - chassis #954

Chassis swap of course, and definitely not a ringed 5a with a cheap Irish plate to cunningly hide the fact!? 😂

I think we had this conversation last time it was up for sale?

It does seem a little deja vous, must’ve been on eBay or FB?

It didn’t seem too bad when this was happening as the cars weren’t worth much...but now they’re fetching good money it’s much more of an issue knowing people will be buying a ringer?

I get the feeling the authorities are getting hotter on this - probably aided by the increasing role of social media and forums to share this information.

I didn't bother checking the ebay/for sale section - it was here in non-tech :)

threads merged and retained for posterity (and it was up for £1500 last year)

Both!

Likely highlighted by me over on the FB group st some point so some poor sod doesnt get bent over a concrete traffic barrier over it's identity crisis.

Although with hindsight, it's still a GTE, so still worth saving even if you need to "clear the confusion" as it were.

caveat emptor...... buyer beware

Auction houses should do more to stop selling "rung" vehicles, they should do checks instead of hiding behind "all details are the responsibility of the vendor"

far too many scimitars out there that that would fail simple number checks. what ever you are buying check the v5 document numbers match the chassis stamped in vin and the stamped engine number. Don't use the vin plate as they are available new (albeit poor copies) and any number can be engraved on it.

is this another scimitar with an identity crisis in the making.....not confined to GTE's

I emailed the auction house just because I was in a strange mood, and pointed out that it appeared to be a 5a but couldn't be a 1970 5a because of the production dates. I got this response

Thanks for your email about the Reliant Scimitar which is in our next auction on 4th September. You are quite right, it is in fact an SE5 which has been done up to look like an SE5a so thanks for bringing that to our attention. I will amend our listing on carandclassic accordingly. You can read a full description of the car and see many photos on our website:

I replied pointing out that it would require a body swap to make a 5 look like a 5a. I await the response.
