Does anyone know anything about se5a TIL2921

Post by Laters » Thu Feb 15, 2018 10:10 pm

Does anyone know anything about a yellow Automatic SE5a automatic reg TIL2921.
Its a 1970 car & its mot history tells little.
Its currently for sale and seller has owned it for a year but it now has a few issues.
Main one being it wont run and spits through carb.
The back bumper has been cut in half (with a gap in the middle) for some reason.
Body has a little damage on a arch & its got a very short mot.
It has a club sticker in the rear window so hopefully someone will be able to fill in a few gaps and I will be able to make a offer.
Sellers price is a bit enthusiastic in my opinion but if he will take a reasonable offer for it because of the issues and short test it could be worth a gamble.
I know I am looking for a se6 but the draw of the se5 shape the same as the previous car I owned is still strong & I would probably have a go at a electric pas conversion if a deal comes off.
Many thanks

This is the one from Facebook?

I’d be more concerned about it being a 1970 SE5a - until the owner can confirm the chassis number from the suspension upright, it’s a possible rebody/probable ringer.

Agreed, I mean I'm a relative ignorant compared to the years of experience all the "old hands" have, but even I looked and called equine manure on it after a little while

Yes its the one from facebook.
OK sounds like its one to be left alone then if there are those concerns.
I can ask him to look for the chassis number to see if he can find it.

Any particular reason for the possible rebody/ringer thoughts?
Last thing I want is a nightmare like that.
His asking price is at least double where I value it with the issues anyway so looking like its time to find something else.

thanks

Not so much leave it alone. But if you *really* want it, make sure your know it inside and out as best you can before commit. If it's just been rebodied then fair enough it's a 5 underneath a 5a body.

Chassis number off the chassis as said above will give a better insight.

But if body and chassis match up, not that it would matter as it'd be tax free now anyway, just make sure you inform dvla that actually it's not what they have recorded incase it comes back to bite your buns off

The SE5a wasn’t being built in 1970.

They didn't start production until.... '72? If my memory after 11 hours driving a disinterested and hopeless brick around isn't totally useless

as Jim says if the STAMPED chassis number and engine number don't match the V5 walk away.

my guess is it being a late 5a pretending to be a 5 to avoid paying vehicle excise duty...

i would make it a condition that the stamped vin is visible before I would view.... as the value of these cars go up so should the diligence to ensure they are what they should be.

Just sat watching tv and that penny dropped.
I really should have spotted that. Oops.
Just thought a 1970 car should be a SE5 like my first Scimitar not a se5a.

Suppose it could be a rebody as per your post but its a little rough in places for that unless it was done a while ago.

thank you for noticing something I should have already.
Thats the reason I asked to be honest as something just seemed a bit off. Obvious now you have said.

A freind saw the advert and sent me a link as I dont really do facebook.

The search continues.
I will put a wanted ad up shortly and hopefully the right car will come along.

Many thanks
Paul

Just also noticed in the photos of the under bonnet the seller has sent the engine has the dipstick behind the alternator where I think being a 1970 it should still be the earlier Essex that had the dipstick at the front (the same as my se5 all those years ago). I am unsure if that can be swapped so Jim is 100% and some thing is not quite right somewhere.

Again from memory the se5 chassis has a different brace near the engine (tubular on the 5 and flat on the 5a).
I really should have noticed all that.

thanks again I want my next scimitar to be a long term keeper so really do appreciate all the help and comments.

I haven’t seen the underbonnet pics but engines and top cross tubes can be changed (my 1970 has a later engine) The cross tube UNDER the engine would give away the age of the chassis though.

I’m sure something will turn up for you.

Be careful not to offend anyone Jim, by stating the blatantly obvious fact that it's been ringed for free tax a few years ago and gained a cheap irish plate to hide the fact

Too late Paul - someone on fb managed to be offended on behalf of the seller when I posted the same info there. :D
