Don't know about the tax category, but it looks to me like it's not what it seems. It looks at first glance a bit like a vintage "blower" Bentley. However the build date and the cylinder capacity look more like a "Derby Bentley". The blower doesn't look quite right either, in fact if I had to hazard a guess it might be one of Bob Petersen's products?

[edit - seems that in it's original form, it passed through Sotheby's in 1998 ]

Yes, obviously a rebuild/conversion but what on earth does "Not taxed for road use" mean? It's usually taxed, untaxed or SORN?

It would have been, if it had looked like that in 1998....... Shame there's no picture with the auction listing, but I'd guess it was just a donor, a ratty old Derby Bentley special

Re the status, as I say, I've no idea. I've never seen it before either. However, a bit of googling seems to suggest it's not totally unheard of, but everyone who has encountered it is baffled! The most potentially plausible explanation seemed to come from an Austin Seven forum, where it was suggested that if the V5 was sent for a change of keeper, but without an accompanying SORN declaration or tax renewal, that's what the status would become? I don't know if that's even possible?

Ah yes, that would be Martin Overington I believe? He had both those cars out at last year's Benjafield's Sprint at Goodwood (unfortunately a date clash stopped me getting there this year :( )

That's the way to go racing!

Following-on from my previous note, if you want a fix of vintage Bentleys (as well as other interesting machinery) then the Benjafield's Sprint is worth keeping a lookout for. I set up an album on Flickr for the 2016 event, which can be seen on this link :)
