I want to get the cars registered as VHI, Then I want to insure them as they need to be on the Insured database BEFORE you can apply for Tax, then exemption.
Why do you want VHI before insurance?

MOT changes

I think I'm jumping the gun. My MOT runs out on Tuesday, so I have both tax & MOT at the moment. So when I try to re-tax the car (1968) it checks the MOT and finds a current one and I don't get asked about VHI, I think I need to try again on Wednesday.

The two i did today had no mot so it looks like its not that simple , so doing it the day after your mot runs out is the right time

Jim I just wanted to get the ball rolling and get the cars "covered" BEFORE I decided what to do with them.
I have DEE and WWW on the registrations and they Must be worth something?

My second GTC was JJW, my daughters initials, I "Swapped" the reg onto her car before selling the GTC, dvla assigned CCA as new reg which just happened to be Cath`s initials.
Academic really as Cath don`t drive.

I've just taxed one Historic Vehicle and changed 3 to Historic Vehicle class (without MOT's) at the post office with nothing to pay and told all 4 are now taxed and registered as not needing MOT. We'll wait and see what comes back from DVLA !

Well, Rebel Alliance,
I tried online, and had to enter the V5C reference number, not having had a (V11 ?) reminder.
it warned me that it was already taxed as a Historic, i.e. zero-rated Road Fund, and did I want to proceed? I of course said yes, and it then told me I had successfully taxed it; however at no time did the question appear allowing me to self-certify eligibility for MOT exemption.
This probably means instead of doing it in April '19 I'll now have to wait until May '19. Doh

I tried that several times with mine and even though it's shown as taxed untill May 2019 and MOT due June on the vehicle check. When I put in the V5C reference number it comes up with vehicle not known

Same here with HUM so if I fancy a big fine and points I'll be out later
NOT, it's not been near a road since 83, as last tax disc says, and no way as a conscientious owner am I taking it on one until a mot is granted.

Can I presume that ALL contributors on here who are saying they have registered their cars as Historic and Tax free have bought Insurance for the cars that they are NOT going to take on the road??
As I understand the law you cannot Tax a vehicle ( even one that is tax exempt ) unless its on the insurance database.

Yes, the car must be insured, I believe. Mine certainly is.

Ok don't shoot the messenger but here goes....from my own experience on sunday and a long discussion on the facebook page, if you have no mot you can retax and get mot exemption on line .....if you HAVE an mot you wait till it runs out and apply online the next day otherwise it won't give you exemption .....if you have a v5 for a car that is eligible for historic status but has not yet been changed take it to a post office and you will be given a years free tax and mot exemption even if you have NO insurance apparently ?.......As i said i'm just passing on what i know and the last bit, is what i got from someone else....emailed you philip
