Amazing how many eBay sellers seem to “forget” to ask for the required documentation. Halfords, on the other hand, seem to need the deeds to your house and a letter signed by two barristers in comparison. Unless the car is outside the shop, of course - which nullifies the requirement.

Oh how I wish more suppliers would take that stance. I dislike having to have the supplier name on the plate and even more when they use a large font size or a panel below advertising the garage.

I specifically got MB14's plates produced in the size and font used in 1989 - without any supplier identification - and they have passed all the MOT's since I fitted them. The SE5a's are black and white with no identifier either. I have resisted the temptation to replace the plates on the moderns. :roll:

I'm sure they'd be fine, because they're not date-stanped, and there's no requirement to retrofit new style ones, so the MOT would just consider them as though they were fitted when new.

Yes, that was my reasoning but it depends on the officiousness of the MOT tester. Thankfully the ones round here seem to be reasonable in that respect.

Ah, but to be safe they have to be able to read your number plate to fine you for being unsafe! :lol:

And judging by a lot of the "Non Regulatory" plates that are pictured on here there are a lot of blind testers. :w

I suspect a lot of people fit “MOT standard plates” for one day of the year, the same as others refit their catalytic converters etc,

The MOT test, is a test of compliance with the MOT rules, which is a subtly different thing.....

I don't believe so - The MOT requirements are obviously the same as the legal requirements that they reference and are based on, but there are a good many things on which the MOT requirements are silent, but which are in the overall C&U or related regulations. A couple which spring to mind are over-dark tints on front windows and high wattage headlamp bulbs. So just because your car passes an MOT, doesn't necessarily mean it's completely safe and legal.

Running a Hot rod without mudguards is not a MOT fail,but is against construction and use regs . It’s all a nightmare

Yes, an MOT test isn't as stringent as the C&U regs it's based on (or it would take 5 hours like an IVA) but it's hardly a nightmare - it's all quite clearly documented!

An MOT is an annual test to confirm a vehicle meets the minimum requirements of safety, roadworthiness and exhaust emissions required in the United Kingdom.
