5 series are lovely cars. I did consider a 5 series (Xdrive) along with E Class, Superb (4x4), A6 (Quattro) and Passat Alltrack when I bought the A4. Unfortunately they don't have the ground clearance or ease of access that I'm now looking for.

The more I look, the more I keep coming back to a Touareg. I can get a low mileage 14 plate for about £23K (less than half the price when it was new) or a new one with £11k off list. I'm struggling to find a negative review of the current model or any known failure points (Earlier models did have some issues with air suspension and engines).

Touareg is the choice - if ground clearance is what you want - looked at some myself and quality motor

It's looking that way

Though XC90 is also a contender.

The new one? or old one - had old one - an Executive with all the bits - nice BUT not as refined as VW - if the new one I can't comment - nice choice to have though:)

Up to 2 years old and you might as well buy new as when you take into account warranty etc and if buying the right model (do your homework) discounts are so good that used doesn't make sense. When I looked at the jags the discounts available wouldn t fill the tank 3 times, whereas BM some audis, some mercs you get 6-10k off list before haggling. Makes the 'cheaper jag 5k dearer!

Volvo servicing is cheap if you do look at xc90, we only use main dealers and very reasonable. Depending on how you buy, wasn't worth buying the maintenance package on the Volvo unless you did more than 25k miles a year.

It does look the business, but should only be considered on a PCP or lease. At least that way you have a GFV, but you'll still be paying a huge amount for the expected depreciation. They'll probably be tremendous value at 24-36 months old.

Not really they fall into a similar class as the l200 or the navara but with a little more class.
