Chassis, chassis, then the chassis! They' weren't galvanized so serious rust can easily occur and it's can be a body off or a re-chassis job. I rescued a Kitten that had been stored outside and the chassis was so rotten you could pull bits of it off by hand. The front suspension ripped away as it was winched in!

Worth ckecking the state of the coolant and oil, but if it runs well and isn't rusty, just buy it as they're getting hard to find in good condition.

Watch out for crusty fuel lines and fuel leaks as the carb sits above the manifold..

Other than serious rust the rest can be fixed quite easily.

Production ran from 1975 to 1982, So 77 (S Reg) is fairly early. From what I’ve seen the majority seem to be 76-78.

As had been said, rust.... the chassis is an upside down top hat section with a strip spot welded to the top - the rot gets between the joint and blows it apart, and the moisture sits between the shell and the chassis.

Also check the bottom of the B posts are still attached to the chassis. There’s a box section hoop bonded into the shell and bolted to the chassis - this rots off at the bottom. The seat belt on the B post is bolted to this so it...

Everything else unbolts (falls...) off easily enough to not be a problem.

Ball joints on the front - difficult to get replacements. A lot of Kittens have had the front suspension modified to get rid of them and fit disc brakes instead of the drums which seem to go out of balance quickly - one time you brake it will pull to the right next time it will pull to the left. Having said all that we loved ours, much underrated wish I had kept one.

The Kitten register (Brain Marshall) will send you in the right direction for ball joints. I bought two pairs easily.

That's the stort of car I prefer. Something that's been in the same owners care for a long time.

Would love to own another kitten one day, hope there are some original cars left when I go looking. Seem to be having bike engines badly dropped in left right and centre these days.
