Can anyone tow me please?

Post by Darius Jedburgh » Tue Feb 13, 2018 9:49 pm

Good day Members,
Newby, just bought Scimitar GTE 1973 SE5A with Essex 3.0 and auto box.
It will need a tow from Colchester to Canterbury (Google maps, +/- two hours, 100Miles, Dartford Tunnel Fees prepaid). Transport any day/time around the end of March 2018. I know someone who can do the job but thought it would be far more sensible to give the mission/£'s cash to another Member rather than a Muggle.
The car weighs fully intact, wheels have air and turn, the other bits and bobs to go in the back of my estate car. Plenty of room when collecting, goes straight into garage, and door closes upon arrival here. Breakfast/Lunch/Tea offered either direction if required, excellent hostelry available upon completion of mission.
If you cannot manage it yourself but have a contact who can and is sympathetic to Scimitar victims, please let me know.
Many thanks.

As far as I know you should never tow an automatic vehicle, not even suspended tow. You risk doing damage to the gearbox.

Perhaps “tow” means on a trailer?..

For Gods sake men, is this the Pedants Club? I apologise, my mistake I should have said tow me on a trailer or suchlike. I really didn't think I needed to write that. To see replies stating that I should, 'never tow an automatic' etc. etc. beggars belief. If there is a Member who is now not totally irritated by this reply, I would really like to meet you to restore my sanity. Apologies again for omitting, 'on a trailer' for all those who needed to see it written down.

It wasn’t meant to be pedantic - purely clarification car as some aren’t aware you can’t tow an automatic with its driven wheels connected to the gearbox (for long anyway!).

Sadly I’m too far away to assist (plus my trailer doesn’t quite run to coping with a GTE).

Thank you Phil, an appalling way to start my membership by me, and all because of a slip of the tongue. There is no way I will get any help now but it was my fault and I will learn. I am sorry you cannot help as well, I could now use a friendly endorsement! 'Never try to ....' fits so well?

Have you made contact with the Kent noggin? They’re a friendly lot and longstanding members- hopefully they can point you in the right direction.

Thank you Phil, I may well try them but I think its probably better to get the car home and have a bit more idea about it first. Reg. No. Engine No. etc. The car comes with some spares as well, a couple of front windscreens and a new inside I think. Hopefully much will be re-useable and parts I can pass on to other members if rare/unobtainable or just plain too expensive.
