Se5a Quarterlight seal - Remanufactured!

Post by SilverComet » Tue May 10, 2011 11:33 pm

I rang the dealers a month or two ago (or dad, can't remember) and asked about quarter light seals for 5a doors (both of mine seem to be letting air noise in which is loud enough it makes it difficult to hear the passenger).

Got informed they were no longer available and wouldn't be in stock in the forseeable future.

does anyone know anywhere to get hold of some? I always assumed it was a reliant's own part, but did another car use them?

if not I'll try and seal them up best I can, thanks for reading

I tried for ages to get hold of some new ones, With no joy at all. I even tried buying Triumph and MG seals of the period to see if they fitted... I' hoped reliant had them as an off the shelf part but again had no luck and I spent a few pounds trying. Currently mine don't leak water but there is a huge air leak on the passenger side its very annoying at speeds over 40pmph.

I bodged it shut with black tape but it still does leak, the real solution would be to get them remade. Even If they cost quite a bit It would be worthwhile. If not I could see myself repalacing them with a single pane of glass at some point which would be a shame.

For what it's worth the Q/light seals are originally from Fords's MK1 Cortina. Needless to say they have been unobtainable for years from Ford, unless you can find some old stock anywhere.

If this is correct and qtr light seals are MK1 cortina , then they are available from Lotus Cortina specialist . What we need is a photo of a MK1 cortina qtr light to compare . Roy

I spoke to a manufacturer during investigation for these parts.

I got tooling costs down a lot (about half the original quote) but they were still going to be about £150 a pair IF I could sell 50 so the risk of being left with lots of stock (read - members money) was too high.

As with all remanufactured parts threads, it never gets closed/deleted and remains open until we get them made.

perhaps a mod could link this to the old thread in remanufactured parts (although the part was slightly different, so perhaps a new thread)?

East Kent Trim Supplies does them for the MK1 cortina @ £72.98 a pair but no pictures, if you email the company they may be able to send some pics.

They also do lots of windscreen rubbers at very good prices, does anyone know what the 5 & 6 rubbers were origianlly from?

Good grief, if they are Mk1 Cortina it's got to be one of the best kept secrets in Scimitarville. Along with many others, I was trying to find them when I had my SE5A in 2005. No one on the online forums suggested 'tina MK1 whilst several people were busy looking for alternatives sources. I really hope they are as that will help a lot of people out, but at seventy odd quid it'll be a brave experiment.

I certainly didn't know they were Cortina - I need someone to confirm before I buy some through club spares though - although it looks identical, the Mk2 has a totally different hinge arrangement.

Yes, I must admit my reaction was much the same as Steve's - I'm amazed if it's true, that it's been such a well-kept secret. I've been a member of Scimitar internet discussion groups for almost as long as they've existed, and it's news to me (doesn't mean it's wrong of course!).

Wearing my moderator hat, Jim's right in saying that there are two threads in the Parts Remanufacturing section -

This one, which really relates to coupe quarterlights, though it contains many references to Se5/5a also

This one, which deals with the seal UNDER the quarterlight that the window sits on

As neither of those are really exactly the same as this, I'll move this thread to Parts Remanufacturing in it's own right.

Ah apologies Roger! I saw those two threads but looked at the location of the coupe one and figured not this, and the other wasn't really for the same thing. Didn't want to put it in remanufacturing, as if they already existed figured it'd be in the wrong place.

Here is hoping they are mk1 cortina, as I am getting annoyed with them, and close to some black sealant and a putty knife.
