Stainless Steel Door hinge mountings

Post by gtcse8 » Thu May 17, 2018 9:20 pm

After a few projects needing the doors re aligning/hanging it has come to the point that even the Middlebridge door hinge mounting plates have corroded to the point of no return, and the system of using studs welded to thin plate to bolt the hinges up is not ideal after all these years.
The problem is that as the original internal plates with welded on bolts were only just adequate when new, after all these years when doors need re hanging these nuts and bolts just break away from the plate and cause so much aggro to replace before even thinking about adjustments. :(
You have to first remove the old stuff then find something adequate to spread the loads of the new fixings before even trying to get a good door shut.
After years of messing with this problem I came up with a permanent cure, Stainless Steel mounting plates.
These are 6/7mm tapped plates that fit within the door and is held in place with Zinc plated bolts. :P
This does away with the problem of seized nuts and ripped out bolts from the original plates, and the thicker plate spreads the clamping loads over the fibreglass. :W
I have fitted a lot of these plates over the years and found it a lot easier to make door hanging adjustments once fitted as you don't need to access the bolts inside the door to make adjustments. :drum:

Simples really.

I am now looking at mass producing these kits at a projected cost of £6.50 per unit,( all plated bolts and washers included ) with Two per door needed the total price would be £26 per car plus post. :?:
These will fit all cars from 5`s to MB and possibly Coupe`s too?.
IF I can get enough interest/orders I could get this cost reduced.

Any takers/interest??

A set or three for me please Mark
Also I’m having my power steering rack removed hopefully by this weekend.
Will you please send all the information to get it delivered to you safely. Including the best way to protect and package it. What other parts should I buy whilst it’s off? Do you or can you include any necessary pipes and bellows/gaiters?
Regards
Ron

I would want two sets if they are ok for the Coupe - my memory is not good enough to know what's in the Coupe door

Hi Mark,
I'd like two sets please.
One set for the GTC and another for the Coupe, which is completely stripped so maybe adaptable to this solution.
Thanks,
Guy

Guy as your Coupe is stripped could you possibly measure the mounting holes in the door to check they are the same as GTE`s please.

Or if you have the old plates with the welded on bolts that would be better.

I now have enough interested owners I will go ahead and start production.

I will contact everyone as soon as they are made, so if anyone else is interested please get in touch and I will add you to the list.

Thanks Mark

From what I've seen a coupe and se5 door shell is the same 5a virtually the same so can't see why the hinge fixing plated would differ, currently doing the same with my coupe but with flat steel plate and welded bolts, reasoned that they lasted 40 years and are more than likely to be on a car that's garaged most of the time and not used as a daily, got steel free, bolts were £6 for all 16 plus nuts and washers though if Mark's gearing up to make them count me in as I've yet to cut steel and it'll save me some time.

If I may suggest, please consider using stainless bolts too rather than galvanised.
Galvanic corrosion will exist between galv/stainless, which makes this combination worse than galv bolts to a galv plate.
Stainless is more Noble that carbon steel, so the zinc would be sacrificed more readily.
