Hi Peter

Just come home to box your Ti dizzy up for returning.

I have kept away from the window frames due to the lack of the correct profile steel, I did look into it a long time back but could not get anyone able to roll the profiles..
You could of course just get plain U section as the last time they were on offer, but you then have the problem of keeping the rubbers in place.

It will be nice to have a spare dizzy again - not that they fail very often. Nearly finished rubbing the Coupe down for re-spray - just around the bonnet to do.

Have just come in from the garage after digging out my 2 triangular brackets and have found them to be a mirror image of each other ( 1971 Se5) so maybe it is just a 5a thing. Maybe by that time Reliant were outsourcing them ? Did they outsource many item other than bin parts from other manufactures ?

Hi Hylton :)
If you look at the first and second pictures, which is the Passenger side, you will see the top mounting fold goes right up against the spare wheel tray.
Then look at pictures 3,4 & 5, of the passenger side, and even though the top fold is the same width it stops 1/2 inch short of the wheel plate.

Its only obvious when you know its there.

All my cars have this fault and the spare wheel mounting plates have cracked in this area because the top tray is pulled upwards when every thing is tightened.

Both sides actually look identical when put back to back, its just this top fold that is wrong.
I only discovered the fault AFTER I had cut the blanks and done the first few trial bends
WELL NOT ANYMORE, at least on My cars now. :D

I doubt very much if Reliant had an IN House sheet metal shop as the equipment, labour, steel stock etc would have been very expensive. :w

My aging steel Guillotine cost me well over £1k, and my folder Half that, and when you add up the other equipment needed for fabrication it`s eye watering.
Probably why QRG charge so much for their steel work as its all bought in, whereas I do all my own.

Right, now I understand. Unfortunately I am not in a position to put mine together at the moment,so when I do I will look more closely .For some reason I thought Reliant did everything in house. :w

Jim
Just realised that your thinking of powder coating all your parts.
My local powder coaters don't like galv/zinc plating as the finish and adhesion is bad, so they tend to gritblast anything that has been plated.

As this makes it a total waste of time making things out of anti corrosion zinc plating, do you want a set making out of plain mild steel??.

This would be slightly cheaper than the zinc/galv plate.

This also applies to anyone else who wants a set making of course, so if your planning on getting anything other than standard paint on the steelwork I would suggest standard mild steel sheet.

Mark

If you mean the one I sent last month, NO, its zintec sheet, which is a galve sheet.

IF, you wanted one out of plain steel I would either take the galv one back OR pass on your details to someone who wants to buy a galv one?.

Up to you really.

SE5 & SE5a FRONT TRIANGLES FOR SPARE WHEEL SUPPORT

Post by mikesu » Thu Nov 02, 2017 4:36 pm

Hi,
Are these items available yet/still?
If so, are they sized to allow an infated 195x14 tyre in under the bonnet lock panel? I understand that the cars left the factory with 185s all round, but even a 185x14 tyre was a very tight fit unless stored with no air in it. My '71 SE5a currently has 195s on the front, 205s on the rear and my spare is a 195 tyre, which has to sit loose in the back of the car. :-((

Would be interested in the panels if they will solve this problem.
