Registering a scimitar in Belgium.. or in UK

Post by frederikromnbach » Wed Sep 12, 2012 4:33 pm

Hello fellow scimitar fans,

I recently acquiered my first scimitar, which i would love to start driving, were it not that the belgian government have made it entirely impossible to get the car registered for daily use. Can anyone help me with tips? Last I heard the best thing to do is go directly to the head office of the DIV [equivalant of DVLA] with as much info as I can find and request a registration for "unique vehicle [alleenstaand geval].
If this doesnt work I have one more option. My sister is registered in the UK. The idea would be to register the car on her name with UK papers. The car was taken out of registry in the UK in july 2011.
Could anybody tell me how much the taxes, insurance and re-registration might cost?
Any and all help is more than welcome :D
I really really really want to start driving my baby...
Kind regards,
Frederik

Frederick, welcome to the forum :-)

Pretty sure there are Scimitars registered in Belgium, so it must be possible?

To bring it back to UK and register, you will need the V5C (if you still have it?) - around £20 if you don't. Then an MOT will cost around £50 (providing it passes :-)), then road tax is £220 for 12 months. If it has been "exported" on the DVLA computer, I think it will require a VIC check (over 10 year old vehicles are treated differently) - currently £41 if you need it. You'll also be driving it illegally as soon as you land, so will need a trailer etc!

Hi Frederik

Would you like me to ask our friend Jacques Vandevelde to contact you? He lives in Aarschot and owns a Sabra, an Scimitar SE5a and an SS1. The latter he bought from the UK in recent years and must have gone through the process that you need to. I am sure he would be very happy to help as best he can.

Well done Tony & Jaki.

I would add that if a Certificat de Conformité is necessary, as in France, we can supply for all models to RSSOC members.
In french but not in dutch, that would need translating!

And welcome to the forum Frederik, the car looks good!

As far as I know, Jaques sold the GTE, the SS1 is in use by his sister. He spends more time in Spain than in Belgium (lucky man).

Frederik,

I contacted Thijs (his forum name here, not active since 3 years...) for guidelines to convince the Belgian authorities to allow your GTE to become Belgian.

Hi,
Thanks for all the tips and info! From next week onwards the car will be registered in the Netherlands. In the meantime i can get my head around the procedure for acceptance in Belgium. I'm sure it will work... eventually. It really is the most incredible object I have ever owned!

Was the car then registerred in Belgium? I have plans to do the same as I bought a GTE this weekend! Still some work to do. Pitty also the bodywork isn't too good ... as they mostly seem to tend to ...

I bought a SE 6a LHD in Belgium early this year. So I have the registration documents of this car which I could copy for you if these could help you!?

Just to show the officials work in every country due to specific regulations wnd a total lack of commen sense: I cannot register the car as it is in Switzerland due to lacking proof of the exhaust gases conforming to the Swiss laws of this specific car. There is a COC in Switzerland but the owner died and with him the access to it. The official way I could go based on the Swiss authorities recommendation would cost a fortune as I would have to let the car make a special "exhaust gas analysis cyclus" ( approx. cost about 2500 to 3000 CHF!!).

Inbetween I could buy two LHD SE 6a's and the documents of another Swiss car. So with a little bit of fantasy there are ways to overcome the silly rules.

Should you need the Belgian copies (which are in Flamish, not french) please let me know.
