Reliant Mistral Special for sale

Post by DARK STAR » Wed Jan 11, 2017 9:40 pm

Reliant Mistral Triumph Special pour être plus exacte
http://www.prewarcar.com/postwarclassic ... 09816.html
mais pourtant ça fait penser d'une SS1 / Clément je vois rien de Reliant dans les photos, tout ce qui est visible est de chez Triumph ...

Reliant Mistral Triumph Special to be more exact
http://www.prewarcar.com/postwarclassic ... 09816.html
but although that makes one think of an SS1 / Clément I see nothing of Reliant in the photos, everything visible is from Triumph ...

The Mistral was made by microplas - nothing to do with Reliant AFAIK.

Of course, it may have been registered in France as a Reliant for import purposes?

Yes, that is my understanding too. I've only ever seen one on the road "in the flesh", that was a patinated green one which came to the Goodwood Breakfast Club a few times. This one was based on an early TR.

In fact, it was this one:

There was one sold last year that was on a modified sabre 4 chassis with a Triumph engine

Tribute (the kit car company that was loosely involved with the Scimitar based kit) made some moulds and produced some recently here

And Elvis drove one in a film :-)

Image

A bit more info ...an American was researching the history of the Cobra that Presley drove in the film 'Speedway' from which this still was taken. The Mistral stood in for this shot:

'The body design, penned by Bill Ashton, started out as a product of Microplas, a company formed to build fiberglass bodies for Austin Sevens in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. The Mistral was Microplas’s second body design, released in 1955 and intended for the Ford Ten. At various points in time, Buckler, Fairthorpe and TVR all used the Mistral body on their chassis, as did Bob Blackburn down in Christchurch, New Zealand, who intended to go into full production with a Graeme Dennison-designed chassis, but couldn’t source enough Ford Prefect parts and so sold the body and chassis as a kit.

In 1956, Californian Bud Goodwin licensed the body from Microplas and sold it in the United States through his company Sports Car Engineering. (Geoff believes there may have been an East Coast company that licensed the body design as well.) Goodwin, who later went on to start Fiberfab, only sold the Mistral for a couple of years before selling Sports Car Engineering to a company called Du Crest Fiberglass - who mounted a Mistral body to an Austin-Healey chassis and raced it in the early 1960's so far remains a mystery.

The stunt double car – not the hero car – is on display at the Hollywood Casino in Tunica, Mississippi'

The above info from 'Hemmings Daily' blog.

Allegedly the first TVRs, Fairthorpes and Bucklers were made using Mistral bodies ..

Were Elvis fans really so dim that they didn't see the difference between a Mistral and a Cobra?

Some very good looking cars there.
Here on the other hand is a real Reliant (Clément) Mistral
Erwan Rissel's 'Golden Scimitar'.

Nice 8)
I hope Erwan won't have troubles with the gendarmerie/police with those non-standard plates
(only silver letters on black background is tolerated for cars with a carte grise collection ... all other cars
require the ugly new plastic plates)

Cheers, Fred

The following piece is from our article in the last issue of Slice:-
The ex. Roger Cook Sabre Four chassis keeps cropping up. I made an enquiry to the last known owner as to whether he might want to sell the chassis. .... I heard nothing, but shortly afterwards there appeared on eBay an advert for a “Microplas Mistral Sabre”. An enquiry to the seller confirmed that this was indeed based on Roger’s old chassis. Microplas was a 1950s Ford specials manufacturer. Most 50s and 60s Ford and Austin specials are, to my eye, ugly but a search on the internet soon revealed that the Mistral body was quite capable of making a very attractive sports car.

Ah, I read that but as usual I'd forgotten and didn't make the connection.
I thought it was a Triumph Herald

Ah yes, at Bonhams Goodwood Sale - I should have remembered (though to be fair, I suppose it is 10 years ago  ). I was there, but obviously decided to pass-up the opportunity.....
