Let's drive in the mountains ! [ pictures heavy ! ]

Post by FrenchNewbie » Wed Jun 17, 2015 12:25 pm

Today was a great driving day !
I drove about 50 miles on the "Route des Crêtes", it is a beautiful mountain road across the Vosges Mountains (Alsace, France).
This is where I live. The road is a "ridge road" at altitude 3600 feet all the long (1100 meters).

Good to see that at one point you were on the correct side of the road and were doing the right speed.

9th and 15th down - good excuse though if you came across a policeman.

Looks like a great trip in a nice car. And with the steering wheel on the correct side as well :D

When driving in the UK, and other countries where they drive on the left; one can honestly say, "Left is Right, and Right is Wrong!"

Don't think there would be many policemen in the area, too far from the nearest 'apéritif' ;)

Well done Philippe, great photos - and the car looks much better with a proper radiator grille.

Nice photos, of lovely scenery, complemented by a great car and good driving roads - what could be better? :D

indeed ! concerning the 15th (tachymeter) I would have try the MPH-vs-KMH-confusion-trick with the policeman - but not certain that this trick works fine

Bonsoir Philippe
Lucky you living near the mountains ! I haven't been to the Vosges/Alsace area for so many years,
I should pay a visit one of those days ... If you ever plan of organizing a Sortie East-oFrance someday,
you can count on a few 'parisiens' - well at least people who happen to live in this area because of work  -
Thanks for the pics and anjoy the Vosges in the Scimi 8) !
Cheers, Fred

That hasn't gone unnoticed!
I will be passing through that area-ish on the Italian Lakes Rally in Sept so will look out for locations and find suggestions from our travel organisers.
I have already asked the rally organiser if we are using "Route des Crêtes"

An East-of-France noggin could be a great idea !
We have lots of fantastic roads here, it is no coincidence that the WRC rally of France was organized in the area the last three years.
The area is very close to Germany, where there is an highway without any speed limit, you are allowed to drive at 150 mph (or more) if you want / can.

Some details about the Route des Cretes :

- very low traffic during the week, but lot of traffic during the week-end (on saturdays and sundays) and during the summer
- the road has been built during the First World War
- the road is closed during the winter (there is often more than 6 feet of snow on the road, and the road is crossed by several ski slopes). it generally opens in April and closes in November
- if the weather is bad, even during the summer, we see nothing at all ; weather can be very bad, very windy, very cloudy, very snowy all the year long

Here is a video I made with my little Suzuki in 2013, the road was just reopened after the winter ; you can watch the video below, or you can watch it in HD here. Hope you will enjoy it
