I suppose MY main issue here is that you got the parts WHEN you should have got them, ie in time for MOT. :o
And "PLEASE" Chris look up the correct way to adjust the rear brakes once you have the car out of the present position

Yes, delivery was fine.
The job is now looking better, I have new rear brakes but the handbrake still isn't sorted.
Seems you need to jack up both sides at once to do it
Anyway the new shoes are on, all tidied up and the other drum put back.
Checking the adjuster this time it only seems to have two positions and it was already on the smallest so the drum was still a tight fit.

The adjuster has multiple positions - I've scribbled on your photo below to illustrate:

As you turn the square key on the back, that screws in or out the cone in the middle (indicated in yellow). That causes the adjuster wedges to move in or out (indicated in red), moving the shoes apart or together. The cone has flats on it, giving you click stop positions, one per quarter turn.

I need to check, but I thought that the shoe return springs go behind the shoes. You also have the top rear spring in the wrong hole.

Chris sorry to tell you but the top inner retaining spring is through the wrong slot, the one at the top left.
It should be through the top hole and hooks over the lever.

Andy is correct too, the bottom adjuster spring should be behind the shoes to pull them INTO the adjuster slots.

Springs are as I found them (and same both sides) I wondered what the extended bit was for
I'll correct them tomorrow, though they seem to work ok as is.

Thanks Roger, didn't realise the square/rectangular rod was conical.

Its the INTERNAL part that Jacks the shoes apart.

Chris, here's a photo of one dismantled, to show what I'm referring to. You can see how the central cone screws in or out, pushing the two opposing wedges apart (or allowing them to move together), thus moving the brake shoes either together or apart, and adjusting the brakes.

Been too busy to post, but the car passed its control technique no problem so apparently I adjusted the brakes correctly.
Bit of a mystery, I read the pages of instructions without understanding much of it so I obviously guessed right 8)
Now I can sell the beast with a clear conscience.
Perhaps I should put the price up ...

Yes, I sold it.
Here it is off to Leers, near Lille, where Eric Gevaert is waiting.
It will accompany his SE6a ...
