Cloudy Paintwork

Post by Oaksey » Fri Mar 28, 2014 11:49 am

The paint on the GTE is a little cloudy on the top and even a (not very good) machine polish with G3 paste won't shift it.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I can't seem to get a photo that shows it up - a Google search didn't show anything similar either.

As its been painted (in 2k apparently, I don't know), I'm wondering if it has faded and my efforts at cutting it back with compound have failed as the paint is relatively hard. Does this sound plausible?

Its possible. Is it cloudy in patches, or the whole panel?

When it was painted, was it lacquered as well? Has it been stored outside and the paint has oxidised in the sunlight?

Should have popped in on the way back from Huddersfield and had a look.....

Also - please be extra careful when polishing your Scim with a machine. I generally use less harsh compounds and softer pads on any GRP than I would on metal. And often downgrade to a DA machine rather than a rotary so the movement isn't so concentrated especially with celly and softer paints.

The reason being that on metal, the heat generated by polishing is dissipated across the panel, whereas with GRP (as it is an insulator rather than a conductor) the heat is concentrated under your pad meaning it is far easier to create trails or even strike or burn through your paint.

It's all a bit cloudy but some bits are better than others. It wasn't lacquered when it was painted and it will have spent a fair bit of time outside - I reckon it was painted early 90s then it was put in a garage in 97 till I pulled it out in 2012 and since then it's probably spent more time in than out the garage ;)

I'm starting to think it is oxidation, just in a slightly different way to what I've seen on other cars

OK - so we know it isn't the lacquer lifting.

Has anyone else noticed it without you pointing it out to them? Are you planning to enter any Concours competitions?

The reason I ask these two questions is that it is very easy to do more harm than good in these circumstances leading to an expensive paint job, and if it is not noticeable to anyone else (it only bugs you because you know its there) you may be better leaving until such a time as you have the funds to get it sorted properly.

No, no one's pointed it out and the car isn't up to scratch for concourse (for those that were going to point it out, I put it in at curbs to see what an 'average' car would get ;) )

I'll leave it. I'd save up to have it painted but it isn't hideous, it just has some blisters
