Towing with a 6a

Thinking ahead for next years hols I was contemplating towing a small caravan and was wondering what the maximum weight I could tow with my 6a. I have read that the caravan should not exceed 85% of the kerbside weight of the tow car. Is this correct and what is the kerbside with of my 6a please. Do I need any insurance for the caravan. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The 85% is just a guideline, though a very sensible one. Many modern cars can tow well in excess of their kerbweight if you're daft enough, and the trainweight isn't exceeded.
Im not sure on the weight of a 6a, but as far as the caravan goes it is the MTPLM weight you should work off (i.e. max fully laden weight)
Im a bit of a caravan anorak :) and have a facebook page UK Caravanners

With the grunt of the engine and the short rear overhang, a Scim is capable of towing over and above what you might think but I'd guess that 1200kg on the back won't be a problem?

Its the old tail wagging the dog scenario you want to avoid :) The lighter the caravan, the safer it will be!

I thought an old 2 berth Sprite caravan from the 1970's would look appropriate plus these early caravans are not that heavy. I also like the Eriba range but they are quite pricey. If anyone discovers the kerb side weight of a 6a please drop a note. Wikipedia list it as 2,762 lb.

If it is 2762lb then that's about 1253kgs, so ideally a caravan with a laden weight below 1065kgs, which shouldn't be too tricky with an older caravan....pre 70's they were generally heavy, went light in the later 70's / early 80's, then turned slowly into fatties by the late 90's/early 00's, and have been dropping again since.
