Coil Position & HT Lead Length

Post by Mr Bridger » Tue Jun 11, 2019 9:05 am

I need to replace the HT leads on my 5a and would like to use Magnecor leads. The only listing I can find that may be suitable is for an Essex powered Capri. Does anyone know if the ignition coil on the Capri is in the same position as the coil on a 5a?

Coil Position & HT Lead Length

Post by peter freeman » Tue Jun 11, 2019 9:24 am

When I ordered a set of Magnecor leads ( I think from DC Performance ) I had to specify the length of the coil lead I wanted .

Coil Position & HT Lead Length

I think there are two coil lengths specified for the Essex - basically depends if the coil is mounted on the wing or in the earlier position of the front of the near side head. 8 ball has magnecor with the coil moved to the wing.

Coil Position & HT Lead Length

Post by Mr Bridger » Tue Jun 11, 2019 9:39 am

Ok! Rather than get a coil lead to fit the car, I could change the coil position to fit the lead. The thing I like about forums is access to an alternative approach to a problem!
Particularly neat as I've never been in love with the idea of the coil being fixed just behind the fuel pump.
Pete, the cheapest Magnecor leads I could find were from Burton, and they don't seem to offer the option of coil lead length. I'll Google DC Performance though and have a look.
Thanks guys.

Coil Position & HT Lead Length

Check to see which coil you have! If fluid filled (insulated), I wouldn't have thought that mounting it on the engine would be good for it. Vibration and heat were the two main enemies of fluid filled coils when I used them on the Ducatis.
