V6 essex timing gear

Post by Sarecen » Mon Apr 08, 2019 8:22 am

Hi all

As my essex is out of the car for a number of issues, I checked the timing gear which is the old nylon type.

Question is should I replace it with steel or alloy?

Do I need to replace both gears? (even though the crank gear looks flawless)

Thanks in advance

Sarecen

2 Gears. Steel you don't alloy you do - Alloy is quieter with steel you could be lucky ( like me ) and also have no noise.

Yes, the larger fibre gear only needs to be replaced. Steel and alloy are available. I think the club may do a group buy. I had steel which can “sing” a bit when new. Major suppliers like burtons sell them. The fibre gear may fail drastically

John Wade might disagree although he did sell various “grades” depending on measurements off your actual engine, I believe. That does suggest his gears were made to much better tolerances than Ford made the actual engines..

I have had a John Wade steel gear for over 10 years and have used 6500 rpm with no problems and no undue noise

John Wade said in person "Steel timing gears can cause camshaft fracturing at rpm over 6000"

I have never had my engine over 4,000 rpm let alone 6000 - probably why it has done 300,000 miles

I changed my Fibre gear for a Burton Steel one . The noise on start up was awful. It whined like a turbo . I found the noise to be unacceptable and changed back to the Fibre gear. , yes a decision I may come to regret 🙏.
