Essex Crankshaft Oil Seal

Post by Mr Bridger » Wed Mar 27, 2019 6:06 pm

Am I right in thinking that to do a thorough job with minimal risk of leaks afterwards, when replacing the crankshaft oil seal on a 5a the sump has to come off?

For the front oil seal, yes in theory. You can sometimes slice the gasket and lay in a new piece to match as long as the gasket doesn't tear away.

For the rear oil seal, it's gearbox off, plus flywheel before you can remove the seal carrier.

I thought so; thanks. I am talking about the front seal. Does the radiator need to come out as well?

Not unless you want the extra room.
