Gearstick gaiter/boot

Post by Old and Slow » Tue Mar 12, 2019 4:18 pm

Having seen a few pictures on the Forum of the cabin of the Small Sports Cars, I'm thinking that perhaps the rubber gaiter will fit the Sabre Six (remembering that it has the Moss gearbox, i.e. a bit non-standard).
The aperture in the clamping ring on top of the tunnel is 90 mm and the height up the gearstick can be anywhere around 100 mm.
Does anyone have the measurements of the SSI/Sabre gaiter, and if OK, a source?
Thanks in advance.
Philip

The SS1 gaiter is a plywood square with the vinyl attached. This square has press studs to fasten it to the tunnel.

Philip means the rubber boot that goes under it - I can measure one this weekend if you don’t get an answer, I also have spares.

Are they all the same shape (bearing in mind the different gear lever angles?)

Thanks for clarifying things, Jim; I await your dimensions with interest!
Roger - my stick is practically vertical in neutral, and fairly concentric with the tunnel aperture, so provided the rubber boot is flexible I think it will be OK. Worth trying, anyway.

not that it helps much but i think mine is from a Citreon. . . . a boxy shaped item (both car and gaiter)

and didn't know about the press studs on SS1, mine was 'originally' held on with velcro?

or get a 'generic one from tinternet, there is / was a SECOND one on ours for some reason, perfectly circular sort of neopreney feel,

That's exactly why I posed the question - The SS1 gearlever (in the CVH cars with a type 9 box anyway) is far from vertical, so I wondered if that might have implications for the way the gaiter is arranged? I haven't actually had the need to completely dismantle mine, so I've had a hunt around for a photo. The only ones I can find come from Phil Wormald, many thanks to him for taking them, and I hope he doesn't mind me borrowing them.

Here's what I mean by a bent gearlever (showing the outer gaiter referred to earlier)

And here it is with the outer gaiter removed, showing the rubber one. While it seems to be below the bend, so is effectively straight, it also appears as though it's attached to the gearbox, rather than the floor (which your first post led me to think you were planning to attach it to?)?

That is the rubber "spring" of the gearlever Roger.

Will try to grab measurements but the rubber tunnel gaiter is a bit of an orrible thing. Doesn't hold it's shape, doesn't fit the apeture very well and they do eventually split.

I would look at a Reliant Fox / Kitten one as they are intended to be a visible item and were remanufactured by RPW a few years ago.

Ah! I did say I hadn't had to dismantle it (I try to drive the thing rather than pulling it apart, if poss! ). Well you learn something new everyday.

These are the culprits - they don’t “fit” a small sports, they’re sort of jammed under there to keep the worst of the water, heat, noise etc out.

Diameter is approx 140mm and about 150 tall. They have a reverse lip that doesn’t marry up to the chassis :D

Let me know if you want one - I also have the random boot on the right if that would be any better?

Hi Jim,
My need is exactly as you describe - keep out the smell, etc.
The middle shiny ones seem like they'd do the job - I assume they are both the same: let me know what you'd like for one.
Cheers,
Philip
