Engine won't stop
Had to jump start the SE5 this morning as the fuel seems to drain back into the tank with a mechanical fuel pump. Noticed the ignition light was glowing slightly before turning on the ignition. Started first time with the extra power in the battery and all was fine and showing a healthy charge on the ammeter. After a 20 odd mile journey went to turn off the ignition and the engine kept running although the cooling fan turned off. Stalled the engine and wondered whether it would start again and it did, but wouldn't stop when ignition off. Have disconnected the battery as the ignition light was still glowing slightly. It has an electronic ignition fitted - not sure of the make - but need to know where the system is picking up a live feed from. Where would you look first?
Cheers

Ignition switch, Starter solenoid and rev counter would be my first checks - assuming you don’t have any wiring damage that’s simply shorting your coil supply to live?

Ignition switch is the prime suspect but it depends what alternator setup it has - if you’ve got a glowing lamp then sounds like it’s running an ACR type (internal regulator).
Starter motor (assuming the ballast bypass is wired in) is a possibility.

Thanks Jim. I have just lifted the dash top and it's a mess in there! I missed the Morris Minor thread in my search but that has thrown up some useful tips. Time to get the meter out and follow the wires. Does the power feed from the ignition switch to the ignition go through the coil to an electronic system or is there a separate feed?
Cheers

The alternator has an internal regulator and mention of the ballast regulator being wired in is something I know nothing about but will search it now!philhoward wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 9:37 amIgnition switch is the prime suspect but it depends what alternator setup it has - if you’ve got a glowing lamp then sounds like it’s running an ACR type (internal regulator).

Turns out that it is a diode in the Alternator which my local auto-sparks can replace for me tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
