What oil in SE5a 3 rod gearbox - alternative to SAE80?

Post by Jpwill7675 » Thu Feb 07, 2019 12:19 pm

Hi - as part of my rebuild, I am changing the oil in the gearbox & O/D unit. The manual says SAE 80. At Halfords, they only have 70/80 or 80/90. Is one of those alternatives OK. I am guessing that with an old engine, there's no point in using synthetic or semi-synthetic.

Thanks for your advice.

Regards, Jim

I have always used 80/90 for gearbox and back axle - never had any problems

What oil in SE5a 3 rod gearbox - alternative to SAE80?

Post by Dennis Nicholas » Thu Feb 07, 2019 1:13 pm

In my gearbox/overdrive I have been using 75W/90 GEAR oil from the late Alan Dean's brothers company; but he is no longer able to sell directly to club members due to a contract with a supplier firm (have been unable to find anyone who stocks the new logo supplier).
I have also been adding the AFMT from Synionic since Jan 2007.
One important thing to recognise is to use a GL 4 specification and NOT a GL 5.
It is worth reading up how the overdrive with its pump and bypass bits and pieces works.

As above really - 80/90 will be fine but you need to ensure it is GL4, not GL5. Ignore anyone that says it doesn't matter.

If you have no joy at Halfords (as they are forever changing their product lines), then firms such as Comma and Morris do still do GL4 last time I looked - you may have to venture to a more independent retailer or even Amazon do it (Comma GO45L 5 litres for £19.10).

I've used this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Smith-Allan- ... :rk:1:pf:0
It seems more than adequate and they have been helpful answering questions.

And AFAIK you can still get EP80 GL4 if you are prepared to shop around for it - eg Castrol Manual EP 80w Mineral Car Gearbox Oil

Thank you for all the quick feedback. Looks like its GL4. Actually Halfords were stocking a Comma brand. Will check it out and delivery time from Amazon.

Thanks again, Jim

I've just bought some 5ltr cans of MILLERS from their on-line shop. GL4 of course, for the gearbox; and 20W50 with high zinc content for the engine.

Well, that's up to him, as far as I'm concerned it says EP80 in the Workshop Manual, so that's what's always gone in :)

I think using engine oil has been discussed previously - was it an MG thing in earlier overdrives?

MGs used engine oil in their overdrive boxes. I’m not convinced that the overdrive will be totally happy with 20/50 - pressure settings seem to be different for one running 20/50 and one running EP80 based on the little bit of info I could find when looking at the LH overdrive when used in a BGTV8
