Rocker / valve clearance adjusting nut coming loose...

Post by larrylamb11 » Mon Nov 19, 2018 4:04 pm

Has anyone suffered this issue before? I have one rocker nut that keeps backing off and coming loose, upsetting the valve clearance. It won't stay tight for long before you can hear it and it will quickly deteriorate from there. I am guessing the nut has passed it's useful life. Is there anywhere I can buy a new nut? or does anybody have a reasonable used one they can spare? (I'll happily cover postage etc.)
Or any way of repairing the old one? can i just crush the side in a bit more in the vice and nip it up again?

Either nip it or try Burton Power

Assuming it’s an Essex, i’ve seen this before and as Steve says, you can try making the top slightly oval again, or fit new. I have spares if nipping them up doesn’t work.

In general, self locking nuts should never be able to be tightened by hand beyond flush with the locking part.

Rocker / valve clearance adjusting nut coming loose...

I'm just in the process of changing the block which includes tappet nut removal/fitting. My solution is:-
A. If I have to use both hands to remove them using a tee bar with more than just both fingers and thumbs only then the stiffness is OK.
B. If looser then I put the nuts in the vice and peen the tops over slightly with a hammer and punch. Best o' luck, Crusty.

I'll peen it over first and see if that does the trick - thanks!
