How can you adjust the tappets when you don't know what camshaft is fitted? I understand that the engine/heads in my SE5 have been worked on and improved, and this might or might not have involved changing the camshaft, and the tappets are noisy and really need attention.

I thought you were setting you tappets for engine expansion, i.e. when it gets hot, the metal of all parts expand. And that you set them when the back of the cam face is on the tappet? I.e. This is not the business end? So would not the standard settings be a good place to start. I may be way off base here.

They should not be completely quiet, as they would then be too tight.....erm.

Cheers

Steve

You could measure the lift by measuring how far the push rod moves.
But not the rocker as it has a ratio
Then compare to some specs of popular installations
Usually inlet and exhaust will differ

Thanks for the replies. Not sure that I have the facilities to measure accurately the push-rod lift so, because the bottom of the engine seems so good, I think a winter's project will be to remove the heads and investigate. Unfortunately there is no history of the car prior to 2012 when it was "restored" and I believe it already had the incorrect and modified engine. Now that the DVLA has stopped the V888 service, it's very difficult to try and contact previous owners. I was informed by the previous owner that the head was converted to unleaded but that I still had to "use Redex"

I think it would be strange if the camshaft maker had not stamped it with some sort of info - if only for advertising purposes.

That would involve removing it though, wouldn't it? I am almost reluctant to use the car because of the tappet rattle!

Depends where it is stamped - it might be visible with the inlet manifold removed

Could you not do the old mechanics trick of doing the tappets whilst the engine is running and simply adjust individually until the noise just goes away. Done with the engine hot I believe?

Some cams have to have very loose tappets which make noise all the time

Messy unless you get the idle very low

Ive seen people get an old rocker cover and cut the top off and fit that to catch most of the oil. Failing that a cardboard dam helps

I dont know enough about the subject to disagree Peter but common sense would tell me that you are losing lift the greater the gap which would seem to be counter productive if you are trying to get maximum power?

Ant, have you read the car's old project thread on the forum? At one point they were talking about fitting roller rockers, though whether that was just talk or not I don't know - there's no mention I can see of it actually being done?

First thing is to take the rocket covers off just to check the tappet nuts haven’t just come loose?

WE have a local sprint GTE which runs at just under 240bhp and he tappets on it are very noisy - by design
