Ant, have you read the car's old project thread on the forum? At one point they were talking about fitting roller rockers, though whether that was just talk or not I don't know - there's no mention I can see of it actually being done?
Thanks Roger, I had read the thread but must have missed that post and It could be the answer to the rattle. I have never come across roller rockers before so could someone enlighten me please?!

Cheers
Ant

I've never actually had an engine fitted with them, but I think you could possibly spot them by shining a light through the oil filler hole in the rocker cover?

Thanks Peter, now I know!

Peering down the oil filler I can't tell whether they are roller rockers are not, but I am fairly certain they are not as they bear little resemblance to the ones on Burton's website.

Edit: Thanks Roger, you beat me to it!

As Rev says set them standard and go from there. Have you even checked them to see what gap is there ?
Take for a ten mile run then listen ! You won't do any harm.

I understand that the engine/heads in my SE5 have been worked on and improved, and this might or might not have involved changing the camshaft.

Does it have free revving power up to 6000rpm? If not, I doubt it’s got a cam of any significance.

Kent V63 fast road cam is 16 thou inlet and ex which wouldn’t be a bad starting point.

I shall have to let you know about that because I haven't taken it up that far yet because I am still learning its idiosyncrasies and I've never really found the need to take an Essex V6 much above 5000! However I am going to see what happens next time I have the opportunity.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll have another look because yours don't resemble the Burton's ones either. Thanks.

They look like Chevy roller rockers .
A cheaper and perfectly acceptable alternative

Sounds like he would very much benefit from SYINIONIC AFMT additive (Anti Friction Metal Treatment). Film strength 220,000 psi compared with synthetic oil 5,000 psi and mineral 4,000 psi.
I still have arrangement with supplier for A good club discount (more bulk cheaper it gets). Latest amount bought this month was 4 x 5 Lit and 5 X 1 lit containers (also some 400g grease cartridges) worked out at £64 for a 5 Lit and £12.86 for the 1 lit (including VAT). (normal retail = £104 for 5 Lit)
Pays for itself in petrol saving alone within around 300 to 700 miles for each dose of 10% addtive by volume of oil at first change then 5% at next oil changes......the noise reduction and saving of wear of metal parts in engine/gearbox/axle/power steering is the bigger bonus. Also this oil stays on the metal so no metal to metal on start up after car has been standing for a long time.
Example from MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) Cam and Scuffing test compared with ordinary oil....
39.6% reduction in cam lift loss
26.4% reduction in cam weight loss
13.4% reduction in tappet weight loss.
I have been using in GTC over 14 years 36,501 miles (Also currently in Skoda Yeti) and previously in GTE.

I am happy to arrange the bulk buy for a group and it will be sent directly to the group distribution point (noggin) splitting delivery cost between all.
I have no relationship with supplier other than very very satisfied user and I make no profits (just able to get it cheaper through bulk like everyone else).

Dennis (happy for us all to benefit)
